With Beyoncé, John Legend, and Common opening the 57th Annual Grammy Awards this Sunday (February 8) with a song from Selma, we'll officially have a Queen, a Legend, and a Common-er performing a song about a King.
Rolling Stone reports that Common and John Legend will open the music awards ceremony with a performance of "Glory."
The award-winning song from the movie Selma, a film based on a key point in the life of Martin Luther King Jr., won for Best Original Song at the most recent Golden Globes. As if things couldn't get any better for Common and John Legend, the former tells Rolling Stone that when he and John Legend perform the song, the current reigning queen of the music world, Beyoncé, will also take part.
Bey will introduce the song by singing "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," a gospel song noted to be a favorite of Martin Luther King Jr. "That's a whole other level, to have her singing 'Precious Lord.' I'm excited," Common says. "It's the Grammys stage, so we're going to deliver some of the best performances we ever had. Expect the spirit of what the movie is about, the spirit of what the movement is about, and the spirit of what 'Glory' is about."
With a trio of performers like this, we would expect nothing less. Legend himself has two Grammy nominations in this Sunday's awards. While "Glory" is not one of them, it is nominated for an Academy Award. While "Glory" might not win an award this Sunday, it promises to steal the show.
