Anime characters are pale because Japan is a relatively homogenous society and animators see no need to draw their characters with the types of stereotypical markers (color, exaggerated features) that we use to denote ethnicity in the West. There's no need for it because practically everyone in Japan is Japanese, and thus it's implied that the anime characters are Japanese by default. Stereotypical ethnic markers are usually used for characters that are not Japanese.
Do you ever get tired of being clocked on this site ?

Where was Maggie Q though? She's not Japanese, but at least she's Asian and has a relatively good Hollywood pedigree. And I don't even think she'd be too old either, because she doesn't look that old

Scarlett is okay though. She has the hot hand since she made Lucy (which was meh) smash WW. If they trust her with it, everyone else should too.
The racist thing is boring here. Sometimes with these anime/cartoon turned movie, the annoying fans need to wonder why the animator made the characters look more european white than asian. Once they solve that, then they can discuss why american-whites don't care to cast a white person in a role that is possibly white, mixed with white and asian or asian.

Okay explain this to me, in what way do any of these characters look white? Especially Marge, with her bright yellow skin and blue hair, neither naturally found in any race. They don't, but when Americans watch it they don't for a second doubt they are white. It's the exact same in Japan. They do not question the race of the characters unless given a reason to.
In the Simpsons, they have to give characters cues and markers like skin color, eye-shape etc. to let the audience know they aren't white. They actually do the same thing in Anime with different markers depending on the show.
You're used to watching cartoons and defaulting the race to white no matter what the characters look like and only thinking they are of another race when given a reason to. So you impose that on anime too. They won't be Japanese to you unless they do the same thing to the characters they would in an American show to show they're Japanese.
This explains it really well actually: http://hunty.us/post/60146653075/why...elves-as-white

You're correct, I stopped watching cartoons when I was a small child. Back then we mostly had Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Lab, Tales from the Cryptkeeper, Scooby Doo, not the foreign stuff (except for The Adventures of Tintin).
But seeing as I am part of the target audience for this film, yes. The character does not appear Asian to me.

Ah, as in Tintin!

Interesting theory but you seem to be missing the fact this is a version intended for North American audiences. It will be fully filmed in English.

people should be cast because they are professional ACTORS, not because they happen to look a certain way. I hope you are never given a job in HR or casting. Ignorant.

Well I'm always against Whitewashing, so I'm not happy.
If they're making the American remake, I hope they'll adapt it to an American context, I'm not here for ScarJo pretending to be Asian (giving me blackface teas)
And mess at the one thinking Rue was white when he/she never read the book

Yeah, you're not going to call anyone ignorant but yourself when insinuating Japanese actors don't exist in America, are less-than, and/or unprofessional.

Hollywood will never change.
Are people really in here posting pics of an anime character saying she doesn't look Japanese enough for them? The fact that she speaks Japanese, was made by Japanese and the story is set in Japan isn't proof enough that she's Japanese?

Yeah, this decision was dumb. But let me get this straight - y'all are up for James Bond being black, even though the character is white but when the reverse happens, y'all screaming - RACIST!

There's like 2 major japanese actors in Hollywood. This is not a low budget movie, they wanted A-list. If they cast Lucy Lu the same PC bandwaggoners would say it was too obvious.
Anyway it's you people obsessing with race are the actual racist ones. Ignore the color of ones skin and cast whoever is a good actor = not racist. But then again this is ATRL where people insist they are a minority and a victim to justify why their life sucks.

A British spy from the 1960s, when just 1% of people in the UK were black and most of those were immigrants. Delusional in the face of being PC.

you totally missed what he was trying to say
The original James Bond was from the 60s. The latest film is supposed to be that same James Bond, it's not like he is a different man every time.
