Discussion: Are you in a fraternity?

Are you/have you been a member of a fraternity during your college years? I was just wondering considering that I'm into my second semester of college now and several members from frats have asked me to come check out their houses and considering rushing this semester.
While they seem cool, I've met a TON of people in the first semester and I fear that getting into a frat I will branch out of my old friendships and stop spending time with that, and I don't want that to happen.
So what are your experiences, are you or have you ever been a member of a fraternity? What are the positive outcomes except for partying in the weekends ?
Please keep it positive and troll-free, thanks.

Yeah.
And it's a good experience, try it. Great way to make friends and opens a lot of opportunities.

never understood the concept of paying for 'friends' and automatically being 'brothers' with persons I don't even know / could potentially despise
but I'm told there's more to it so idk really

yes! best decision I ever made.
get to do so many things that I would never do, meet so many people that I never would have met
and it's really helped my confidence
also, before the "paying for friends" argument is made. the money goes towards sports, food, formal events. nobody is paying me to be their friend (i wish). it's like when you pay registration for a sports team. are you paying for friends? no, but you'll probably make friends anyway
it's just a good way to get out and do something different

I have already met a ton of people as I said, in my first semester, so I am not doing this because I feel lonely (although I am extremely social and the more people I meet the better).
The only thing that kind of turns me off is that when I'm around with friends (girls mostly) and go to their parties, they act bitchy and annoying because I'm not greek and they don't usually let non-greek people in. However a couple of weeks ago when I told them that I might rush they are like "OMG YES COME HERE TAKE SOME FREE ALCOHOL".
I guess I'll have to give it a try but that really makes me think that they put interest in front of getting to actually know the person :/

make new friends, and why go into something if you already sound discouraged about it
literally college is / will be the easiest time in your life to meet people, if you go to a public school especially. Join a club or group first, see if that works and if you're unsatisfied then pay all the money to join a frat.

One of the main reasons is because I'm attending a U.S. college from Europe and most people here who are residents have better connections to find jobs after graduation (dad's company, relative knows a CEO, etc.), unlike me. So that was one of the things that really got me into it...

You rarely keep the friendships you make first semester freshman year anyway, so do whatever you want.

Yes. I will say that it's not for everyone but my experience was great; made lifelong friends. Not I mention our parties were epic, lol.

I don't really see it as "buying" friends. It's an organization, therefore there are dues.
Yeah, I pay money, but I won't talk to people I don't like even if they are my brothers
I get networking opportunities, social opportunities and even leadership skills.
They're also ok with me being bisexual, so
I'm a Kappa Sigma, what about you guys?

Yeah, I'm in one... but it's co-educational and for music majors/minors only. So it's basically a Greek honors society. I like it a lot though and everybody's really nice.

Also are are they accepting towards gays in general, considering that I'm in a liberal city? I'm not sure whether they're like the idea of having a gay guy who they call "brother" and have him live in the house with them, you know

Omg they are the ones that like me the most cause I go to their parties weekly and I know almost all the guys there, although they're kind of small at my college so I'm not thinking of joining it. I like them!
I was thinking Sigma Nu/Delta Chi/Sigma Chi..

The guys in my fraternity don't care and I live in a conservative city

They're kinda small here too, we have about 45 active members. Sigma Nu is pretty cool too, I have lots of friends in that fraternity and some of them are gay as well
