top 3 tracks • don't need y'all • fancy (f/ charli xcx) • black widow (f/ rita ora)
a solid debut effort from iggy. the high points are the album are really great and i had trouble choosing just 3 tracks, but some of the low parts are pretty weak (i.e. lady patra, **** love).
9 • soundtrack • the hunger games: mockingjay pt. 1
top 3 tracks • dead air / chvrches • scream my name / tove lo • all my love / major lazer & ariana grande
gosh, i did not expect this album to be so damn good. i can't even choose a consistent top 3 tracks because if i could i would include half the album. lorde did an amazing job putting this together. i also really love the songs with tinashe, charli xcx and miguel. and the technically bonus track the hanging tree of course.
8 • beyoncé • beyoncé
top 3 tracks • ghost/haunted • blow • angel
i really love how cohesive self-titled is. while i do admit that this album has been over-acclaimed due to the release and such, there is no denying that it is still an amazing record. however, i find it drags a little toward the end.
7 • britney spears • britney jean
top 3 tracks • alien • til it's gone • hold on tight
this album really isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be (excluding chillin' with you, which is utter trash), although it does pale in comparison to the rest of britney's discography. will.i.am did ruin a lot of the tracks with his tacky dated production, but i can still bop to most of it and the high points of the album actually soar really high.
6 • ariana grande • my everything
top 3 tracks • one last time • why try • you don't know me
ariana's second album is much more heterogeneous (in a good way) than her first. i like how she explored a few more sounds on my everything, and i'm really looking forward to her growth over the next few albums. she definitely has a lot to offer, and she should write more of her songs because the ones she co-writes are really good.
5 • coldplay • ghost stories
top 3 tracks • magic • midnight • o
while ghost stories is more of a dreamy departure from the band's older work, i always support their musical evolution because coldplay knows how to experiment the best (while their fans bitch and complain about how they changed everything for the worst and they hate the new sound). i personally love this album and it always helps me feel relaxed, in a good, soothing way.
4 • tove lo • queen of the clouds
top 3 tracks • talking body • the way that i am • not on drugs
one of the best pop debuts in a long time! tove has a gift for meaningful songwriting, and i was pleased to find out that most of the tracks are as strong if not stronger than habits. just, wow.
3 • tinashe • aquarius
top 3 tracks • bet • cold sweat • far side of the moon
just when janet seems to have left the music scene forever, i find tinashe, who is a great replacement but also unique and irreplaceable in her own way. it's a shame that her label is forcing her to market herself through her singles as some exclusively urban chick who only cares about partying and relationships, when tinashe has so much more to offer than that. let's hope all hands on deck as the next single smashes and showcases her true potential a bit more.
2 • taylor swift • 1989
top 3 tracks • style • wonderland • new romantics
sometimes i wonder if i should have given this album the #1 spot instead, and honestly i would be happy with both or a tie. taylor's transition to full pop is really well done, and is exactly what i was hoping she would do. it is a very cohesive album and the production is great. however, i'm not sure how wonderland and new romantics ended up as bonus tracks while how you get the girl and i wish you would remain on the standard edition.
1 • lana del rey • ultraviolence
top 3 tracks • ****ed my way up to the top • black beauty • florida kilos
while i admit ultraviolence is not what i was expected from lana this time around, i am nothing less than impressed and satisfied with the album. lana is a lyrical genius, and is the best at painting a picture with her music. it was hard to choose only 3 favorite songs when several songs are equally as good to me. i'm already anticipating record #3!
