Developer: Double Fine Productions Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita () Release Date: January 27, 2015 [Available now!]
Something's rotten in the land of the dead, and you're being played for a sucker. Meet Manny Calavera, travel agent at the Department of Death. He sells luxury packages to souls on their four-year journey to eternal rest. But there's trouble in paradise. Help Manny untangle himself from a conspiracy that threatens his very salvation.
Grim Fandango's epic story of four years in the life (or death) of Manny Calavera, travel agent to the dead, has been remastered to look, sound, and control even better than when it won GameSpot's Game of the Year award upon its original launch. Grim Fandango still stands as a classic of the genre, with unforgettable characters and unique combination of film noir and Mexican folklore.
Remastered version includes:
Repainted, hi-res character textures
New, dynamic lighting
Classic score re-recorded with a full live orchestra
Over 2 hours of exclusive developer commentary
Concept art browser
The comedic beats Grim Fandango hits in the opening cinematic alone are delightful. Reminds you how rare "funny" is in games. Some adventure game puzzle logic and Glottis' chunky orange polygons aside, it doesn't feel dated. It's well-written, rich, heartfelt, funny, and I'm glad as heck it's readily available for everyone to play.
Told with a very unique film noir story and engaging characters, Grim Fandango Remastered just oozes with charm all around. While quite complex, the style of puzzles found here is something that gaming is missing today and works just as well now as it did back in 1998, though the controls can get in the way at times.
POSITIVES
Fantastic new orchestral score
Controls far more easily than it used to
Enthralling story, great writing
Characters and cutscenes look better than ever
NEGATIVES
Backgrounds haven't been re-worked
Widescreen mode should have been done right, or not at all
Grim Fandango represents the pinnacle of 90s adventure games and is arguably the finest videogame noir created to date. This remastered edition stays largely faithful to the source material, preserving it in digital form with some worthwhile extras and tasteful improvements.
Grim Fandango is considered a great game almost 17 years after its release due to various reasons, though the main one has to be the humour within. Its a game that makes you laugh out loud, and Manny is a great lead character. I do enjoy noire-esque stories, and Grim Fandango is something like that. If you like adventure games then it is definitely worth playing Grim Fandango Remastered, be it a replay or for the first time.
(This is from my experience as a first time player circa 1998 and frankly this remake hasn't done anything to help its glaring problems) Grim Fandango was never a good game, although it looks great, sounds, has a great sense of style and a lot of character, you will NEVER OUT FIGURE THE PUZZLES! without a strategy guide to hand, I would even go as far to say they are obnoxious, you just have to hope you click on the right object with the right item at the right time. You obtain items you wont need and will forget about until a couple of hours into it and there is not sense of rhythm to anything you do. Its like Metal Gear Solid 2 (loose reference there), where the first part of the game has the most love put into it then it swoops down hill in quality, as soon as you get out of the first mission area the game fall apart. Expected a climatic ending? NO!, you get a number 9 ticket slapped in your hand so fast you can almost hear Tim Schafer himself saying "There's not funding left, QUICK end the game now!" This game is far to over praised for its own good and would probably work better as a mini series as it has great characters and paints an intriguing picture. You might as well play minesweeper whilst pausing it once in a while to watch your favorite film. No thanks!
^no lies tbh
It's good game but sometimes is stressful because you don't know what to do next.
I finished and replaying it right now, only missing three trophies for platinum, the struggle is real
