First singles don't necessarily have to be the lead.
Using Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway era as an example, Breakaway was the first single but not the lead. At least imo. Breakaway originally was just a song for a movie soundtrack. It was later put on her album and the album was titled after it but Since U Been Gone was the lead single.
The first single is the first single released from the album/era. The lead single is what actually leads you into an era. If that makes sense.
