In the context of Sinatra and the old Hollywood jazz clubs and lounges, I picture him wanting to see more music like that. You can be sexy in a ball gown or something. Like Jessica Rabbit. Sultry and glamorous.
But he could have expanded on his meaning to avoid uproar like this.

wow. you guys are doing too much. it's not that serious. i get what he means. too many artist today get on stage and put on this huge show to distract from their lack of vocal abilities.
it's nice to be able to put on a great show once in a while and dance but its even better when an artist can just get on stage and just sing their heart out!
