Okay they're sonically similar but they have different melodies. It's not a blatant sound-alike Although I prefer Birthday, Sugar is simply more catchy on first listen + Birthday's video just wasn't good.
Listening to it again, it actually sounds a lot like Last Friday Night with its production. The melody, however, resembles Birthday very much so.
Bizarre in that case since she managed to have 8 consecutive Top 10 singles from the Teenage Dream era that were successful from the Spring of 2010 until the Summer of 2012.
Maroon 5 appeals to an even lower common denominator with their latest releases. Plus they have Adam Levine, who never leaves the public eye thanks to a certain TV show, and who makes all the tween girls creaming themselves buy all of their songs. It doesn't matter what they release at this point, radio is going to play the **** out of it.
