Charli XCX talks sexism + collabing w/ Rita & Gwen

Quote:
The music industry is heavily dominated by men - have you experienced any sexism?
Yeah definitely. I count myself as not only just an artist, not only as a singer, but a business woman. I write my own songs, I write my own video treatments, manage other artists, I write for other artists, it's not just about getting on stage and singing a song. I find that sometimes the men who I work with will be totally patronising because they think I'm just a vessel for a song to come out of. And that's not something that I operate, or how I would treat anyone. To be honest I always fight back because I don't deserve to be treated like that - I'm just as much as a boss as they are. And I don't care if people call me a bitch because it's not about being a bitch it's just about controlling your own **** and being a business woman. I don't care if people call me a bitch because I know what I'm doing is the right thing.
Style wise - Who do you look to for style inspiration?
I've always loved nineties Mariah Carey. Definitely the early Britney Spears video, the 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' that whole kind of thing. I love movie characters as well, like Wednesday Addams, the stylist in the movies like Jawbreaker. Rose McGowan as a whole, I always think she looks pretty cool.
You've just recorded a track with Rita Ora - what was that like? She says there's no one 'funnier, cooler or nicer' than you. Lovely compliment - how do you feel about her?
Imagine if I was like 'she is awful!' (laughs). Only kidding! She is amazing, I love working with Rita. She is so down to earth and nice and she is so ****ing talented. Yeah, she's wonderful. I've had so much fun working with her, and she's someone who, when you meet her you feel comfortable straight away but you also feel like you're in the presence of a star. We have so much fun with each other.
Is it true that you're working on Gwen Stefani's new album?
I did write some songs for her record. We weren't actually in the studio together but she hit me up - she emailed me and she was very sweet and into the songs. I don't know if they made the album, but that's me as a 'writer'.
She's cool, we've met and she's so bad ass - a kick ass performer and artist.
