News: King Abdullah dies at the age of 90

The next king will be Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz, state television reported early Friday. The announcement of his death comes several weeks after the state-run Saudi Press Agency said Abdullah was suffering from pneumonia and had been admitted to the hospital. State television showed throngs of mourners gathered in Mecca.

King Abdullah became king of the oil-rich nation, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, in August 2005. But he had been running Saudi Arabia since 1996, after his half-brother King Fahd's stroke. In the context of the kingdom's conservative circles, Abdullah was seen as reformer and often came up against the more hard-line clerics.

Since ascending to the throne, Abdullah took steps toward broader freedoms and invested some of the country's vast oil wealth in large-scale education and infrastructure projects.

so far, every King of Saudi Arabia is one of the sons of King Abdulaziz aka the country's founder so until all of his sons die out, it continues on to the younger siblings. His brother Salman is taking over.

anyway, the Saudi royal family gives me hives so I have no certain feelings about this but seeing what's up next for SA will be interesting.

he's apparently estimated to have 45 sons but going by this there are 11 eligible successors within the current line of succession. the youngest (and new crown prince) being 69 years old so they're eventually going to have to figure out who gets to be King after that which can be chosen in about 500,000 different ways. it's interesting but complicated to say the least.
