Japan's society is quickly getting older and retiring, yet are leaving less young workers to maintain the status quo, pay taxes, produce goods and services, stimulate the economy. With a top heavy population, it creates a huge burden on the younger generation and collapses the economy. A declining population leads to a lot of problems and creates stagnation in every aspect of society.
Sure, in places like Mexico or Africa, overpopulation is more of a survival thing and leads to more problems, it's opposite in a first world country.
