Brazilian professional surfer Ricardo dos Santos has died after he was gunned down by a police officer outside his house.
Dos Santos was shot three times in the abdomen by the off-duty officer after he confronted him near the city of Florianopolis.
The 24-year-old was attacked after he got into an argument with the officer and his brother, according to witness reports.
The police officer, Luis Brentano, has been arrested on suspicion of murder but as yet has not been charged.
Brentano claims that he acted in self defence after being threatened with a knife by Dos Santos, who apparently tried to attack him.
However, a report by Brazilian news site GL Globo quotes police investigator Marcelo Arruda as saying that no weapon had been found at the scene. (read the full article)
