Well, the same applies to Gaga. Katy is the second most popular female popstar in the US at least according to a recent national survey, she's liked a lot.

She was absolutely massive at her peak. She has a lot of critical acclaim and frequently gets praised by legends. She's respected for her many musical talents--she can sing and play instruments. If you search her name on Twitter while she's performing at an awards show, you don't see people making jokes about how bad she is live. She has Grammy awards. Her discography is diverse. The media was following her every move at her peak--she was always in the news.

I think all of that would be more meaningful to me than being only moderately talented, having not won any Grammys, and having a pretty stagnant discography, with it being well-known that a live performance is almost never going to be good.
