But Janet's impact on music was very big too. I'd say she is the second most influential female pop star only after Madonna herself. (with Beyonce coming in at #3 and Mariah at #4)

I disagree with the second part. Janet basically used the same 6 producers over and over throughout her whole career that's why she is not a factor anymore. The only album that is kind of different is the Velvet Rope and that's only for a couple of songs which for the most part weren't even singles.

The person on this thread mentioning Madonna 'genre-hopping' as if being musically diverse AND successful while doing so were a bad thing is plain embarrassing. Today musical diversity is something valued in a female pop artist, and the fact that Madonna basically created that blueprint for pop females where they don't have to be labeled into one genre might be the reason while Madonna is still relevant 32 years after her debut whereas Janet sadly is not.
