Calvin is definitely preferred by females, that's why he does so incredibly well on pop radio for example (pop radio's largest demographic is females and the average listener is aged 30-something).
Calvin might have a large gay fanbase, but straight males don't like him very much. Probably the whole reason of him releasing this song is to broaden his fanbase a bit. It's similar situation to David Guetta with Sexy Bitch, but when he goes back and releases soppy songs like Titanium he loses that demographic all over again.
