Dddd, this is a kii! In a recent DailyMail article the writer used the term "throws shade" in the headline. Look at some of the comments:

Well, it is. "Throwing shade" and most of the slang terms ATRL uses were popularized by Paris is Burning, a documentary about the ball culture of NYC nightlife in the 1980's.
Completely agree, as the DM is an English publication with no need for "Americanisms" which may of it's UK readers will not understand. So? If the article was posted on Yahoo or some other mainstream US news site the commenters there wouldn't know what it meant either. It's not American slang, it's gay slang.
