I believe that the actual effective use of religion is confined to very specific situations, and that way too many people in today's world use it as an excuse to do things that they should not. Religion innately breeds an intolerance for people unlike the adherent, and religion often teaches that there is only one right way to do something, which is a philosophy I generally don't subscribe to. I also believe that religion is extremely misinforming and that it is the easy way out when it comes to explaining phenomena in our world. I not only think that religion is generally useless, but also argue that it prevents civilization from advancing faster.
Think about the ways in which religion impacts our society. People use their belief in religion to justify principles like homophobia. Atheists are simply shunned in the United States. Half of Americans admitted that they would not vote for an atheist president. One's religion should not determine people's perception of them, and yet it does because of the vast impact that religion has had. Unfortunately, religion also gives many false explanations of scientific phenomena. For example, many religions claim that a god created the universe. So far, there is absolutely zero evidence for said theory. Even though we are very, very far from understanding how the universe was conceived, at least science gives us a solid foundation and the ability to make conjectures based on extensive research.
Yes, faith, religion, and purpose may be useful for some people who might be going through a phase of tough times, whether it be economically or socially. But too often do people integrate the highly prevalent false tenets of religion into their everyday lives. People take solace in religion because it helps explain things that are hard for many people to wrap their mind around, but in doing that they are taking the easy way out and not looking to explore or think truly deeply about these principles. For example, one of the major components of many religions is an afterlife, which seeks to explain death and comfort people in that they will not lie in eternal oblivion after they cease to exist on earth. Furthermore, some religions go the extra mile and claim that people's "souls" are reincarnated. Here's the truth: when electrical activity ends in the brain and one's vital organs cease to function, you die. That's that. It's very simple. The problem is that many people can't seem to accept that, so they turn to religion.
I have detailed just several out of countless situations in which people wrongly turn to religion for advice, solace, and reassurance. I hope that you will not make the same mistake as them, and choose to explore the world without being limited by the vicious grip of religion.
