In 2014, Jennifer Aniston's executively produced film 'Life of Crime' was sentenced to straight to VOD status. Released shortly after was 'Horrible Bosses 2' and that ended up being a box office bomb.
When Ani seemingly realized people were catching on to her one "light-hearted comedy queen" trick pony act and wanted to become a serious actress, she did 'Cake', a dramatic role where she "uncovers the details of a suicide and grapples with her own personal demons". Cake currently stands with a 44% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 46 on Metacritic and was ultimately rejected by the Golden Globes and Academy Awards.
However, Ani supporters are always quick to bring up the ~*iconic Rachel from Friends!~*, which apparently is "dominating netflix". Considering Friends ended over a decade ago, is Ani officially a nostalgia act?
She still scored Golden Globe, SAG, and Critic's Choice nominations for Cake which is impressive considering that she's been around for so long and is only starting to gain recognition like that now.
And Horrible Bosses 2 crossed the $100 million mark not long ago. It didn't do amazing but it wasn't exactly a flop.
