So like, do you buy all your books paperback/digital, or do you buy them hard copy, photocopy/scan them then return them for a full price refund/ illegally download them online if you can find them?

Yes, but I have an even better solution:

Check out the textbooks from your college's library. If they don't have it, they probably have the Interlibrary Loan program where you can check out any book from any college that's in that program, for free. I got all my books for the last semester that way. I just sat in my room and clicked and they brought the books to me.

College is expensive enough, and they expect us to buy the textbooks, too.

I buy 80% of my books from the campus bookstore aka the only place I can get them because they're greedy mutha****ers and make you buy the university edition. The other 20% are used copies which students sell.

i wish, the only way you can return a book is if you dropped the class you bought the books for show proof and even after that the book has to be in perfect condition without the intricate plastic rapping it comes in must not be torn. Not even slightly damaged.

Never use textbooks since we have Mr. Google which the most knowledgeable person in the world

I did this once because I had to get a textbook but only like 8 pages were relevant and it was £30

I only buy text books that I will use after college.

Photocopy the rest... Why should I pay full price for a text book I'm using for a few months just to be tossed aside the next year?
