30. Iggy Azalea feat. Rita Ora - Black Widow "I'm gonna l-l-l-love you until it hurts / Just to get you I'm doing whatever works / You've never met nobody / That'll do you how I do ya / That will bring you to your knees / Praise Jesus hallelujah / I'm-a make you beg for it, plead for it / Till you feel like you breathe for it / Till you do any and everything for it / I want you to fiend for it / Wake up and dream for it / Till it's got you gasping for air / And you lean for it / 'Till they have a CAT scan and check on your mind / And it's nothing but me, on it"
Iggy Azalea also makes her second appearance, while Rita Ora makes her first appearance, on my Top 100 of 2014 with their collaboration, “Black Widow.” After listening to The New Classic, this was an obvious choice to be the next single after “Fancy.” Coincidentally, “Black Widow” matches the same #30 position as Iggy Azalea’s “Work” held on my Top 100 of 2013.
29. Nicki Minaj - Anaconda "My Anaconda don't... / My Anaconda don't... / My Anaconda don't want none unless you got buns hun... / This dude named Michael used to ride motorcycles / Dick bigger than a tower, I ain't talking about Eiffel's / Real country ass *****, let me play with his rifle / ***** put his ass to sleep, now he calling me NyQuil"
“Anaconda” holds the #29 position on my Top 100 of 2014. When the low quality snippets of “Anaconda” began leaking, I had no idea what to think. It was so different, so strange, and almost uncomfortable to listen to. When the music video debuted, all doubts were blown away- Nicki Minaj delivered the most wildly inappropriate music video of 2014 and we all loved it.
28. David Guetta feat. Skylar Grey - Shot Me Down "I was five and he was six / We rode on horses made of sticks / He wore black and I wore white / He would always win the fight... / Bang bang, my baby shot me down"
Okay, this song is flawless. Skylar Grey has the voice of an angel, and David Guetta’s production sounds amazing on this track. This song still slays me, but I understand why “Shot Me Down” isn’t more appreciated; the beat is simply too bombastic for most mainstream listeners, and the repetitive structure isn’t for everyone either.
27. Taylor Swift - Blank Space "So it's gonna be forever / Or it's gonna go down in flames / You can tell me when it's over / If the high was worth the pain / Got a long list of ex-lovers / They'll tell you I'm insane / 'Cause you know I love the players / And you love the game / 'Cause we're young and we're reckless / We'll take this way too far... / But I've got a blank space, baby / And I'll write your name"
Taylor Swift’s final entry on my Top 100 of 2014 is with “Blank Space.” This song is a simple, yet powerful, reminder of Taylor’s status as a force in the music industry, and the music video is a near-cinematic experience. Lyrically, it embraces the features of Taylor’s writing we’ve all come to love: she’s never afraid to say what she thinks and take a few shots when it’s appropriate.

26. Jennifer Lopez - First Love "I wish you were my first love / 'Cause if you were first / Baby, there would have been no second, third, or fourth love"
From a #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 to a song that (unfortunately) flopped: “First Love” by Jennifer Lopez ranks at #26 on my Top 100 of 2014. Lyrically, there’s not much to this song, but that’s kind of why I love it: Jennifer sings about wishing her current love had been her first love, her only love. This song holds a universal value, deserving of recognition for conveying this feeling.
25. Tove Lo - Not On Drugs "Shiny, happy, see my world in new colors? / Higher fire, fly my rocket through the universe... / Baby, listen please / I'm not on drugs, I'm not on drugs / I'm just in love / Baby, don't you see? / I'm not on drugs, I'm not on drugs / I'm just in love / You're high enough for me"
Like “Out of Mind,” “Not On Drugs” is explosive, in terms of emotion and production. I first heard “Not On Drugs” as the opening track on Tove’s Truth Serum EP and it blew my mind. This song definitely deserves to be released as a single in the future – it’s simply too good for Tove and her label to ignore. Tove Lo appears one more time on my Top 100 of 2014.
24. Lea Michele - Burn With You "We are broken, we can't fix it / There's no cure for our condition... / I don't wanna dream without you / I don't wanna bleed without you / I'll do anything you want me to / 'Cause I know you'll burn with me too / There's a white light / It's calling me / I don't wanna go to heaven / If you're going to hell / I will burn with you"
“Burn With You” marks Lea Michele’s second appearance on my Top 100 of 2014. This song always captivates me with how powerful the lyrics are- Lea is singing about a love that’s so powerful, that no matter what, you want to stay with the person. This, of course, can be dangerous, leading to the lyric that carries the song: ’If you’re going to hell / I will burn with you.’
23. Cheryl Cole - I Don`t Care "Waking up diagonal like an animal in a cold and empty bed... / Shaking off that dream of you, I got **** to do and I'm ready to forget... / I don't care / And it feels so ****ing good to say, I swear / That I don't care"
This carefree song was a welcome breath of fresh air towards the end of 2014. Cheryl hadn’t really slayed me since 2012’s “Call My Name” after her awfully awkward lead single “Crazy Stupid Love.” Despite the rough start to the era, Cheryl delivered a flawless bop that had me singing along, because it feels so ****ing good to say that I don’t care!
22. Front Porch Step - Drown "Well I’m so tired of the rain falling softly on the ground / Just enough to get my feet wet but not enough to let me drown / I’ve been laying in my bed wishing I had never woken / Begging God to rid my head of every word you’ve ever spoken"
Should I even bother to write about this song since ATRL doesn’t know it? Eh, sure, why not. First of all, this is likely one of the best-written songs of 2014. I’d compare it to the Brand New slayage on my Top 100 of 2013, though “Drown” lacks a lot of the musical intensity. All of the lyrical intensity is present though, and I enjoyed a lot of the tracks on Front Porch Step’s album as well for the same strong writing.
21. Turnover - I Would Hate You If I Could "Forget the nights that we spent laughing / Until the morning on your bedroom floor / Without a thought about your roommate asleep down the hall / Forget the days we’d waste in bed, tangled / The smoke still on your breath / Undressed and pinning you up to the wall... / I was out one night when I saw you and you froze me where I stood. / I would hate you, I would hate you if I could."
Oh, ATRL. This song is lost on you too. I’m actually a bit upset this lyrical masterpiece missed my Top 20. This song is all about trying to not think about all of the good times you had with someone who isn’t in your life anymore. Even if they hurt you, you can’t bring yourself to do anything to hurt them. Keeping their memory immaculate is your way of coping with the loss.
omg I'm so happy to hear that, you mighT like Front Porch Step too then
I didn't think Turnover or Front Porch Step would get any love so I put J.Lo in this update instead of the last one
You might like a song or two in the next set, Thanks for checking out my countdown,
You're welcome! I have fun coming into these and listening to new stuff. I did take a listen to Front Porch Step and thought he sounded a little like Say Anything. It was a good song.
