PEDRO. The Elusive Best Of '14: The Elusive Singles (30-11)
Welcome To My Best Of 2014!
Let's move on to the third set! 20 More!
30. Jessie J - Bang Bang (f/ Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj)
| Album: Sweet Talker || My Everything
Genre: Pop
Writer(s): Max Martin; Savan Kotecha; Rickard Göransson; Onika Maraj
Stars: *****
Appearances: 1/1 for Jessie J || 1/4 for Ariana Grande || 3/5 for Nicki Minaj.
I wasn't really excited about this one, only for Nicki Minaj. Back when this dropped, I wasn't really convinced about Ariana Grande, I thought she was just a Mariah Carey copy and nothing more... I was wrong in SOME parts and I started appreciating her music more and more. As for Jessie J, she still anoys the hell out of me but somehow this song makes me want to jump around and just sing loud. I love the festive feeling attached to it, all the girl power in it and this must be one of the best songs for clubs! It makes you wanna dance and jump your ass off! I love it and obviously Nicki got the best part. |
29. Taylor Swift - Shake It Off
| Album: 1989
Genre: Pop
Writer(s): Taylor Swift; Max Martin; Shellback
Stars: *****
Appearances: 1/2.
When this song came out, I didn't exactly loved it. I thought it was a cheap Pop song with no meaning and just a song that really showed she was a Pop girl now and I still think this sounds like Avril's 'The Best Damn Thing' but with time I started loving this more and more and just like 'Bang Bang', when I hear it in the club I kinda go crazy because you live up for the song's meaning: you shake it off and don't care about anything else. It's a really fun song that puts pretty much everyone in a good mood. I also kinda relate to it: "I go on too many dates but I can't make them stay"... Oh Well, this wasn't supposed to be shared. |
28. Sia - Chandelier
| Album: 1000 Forms Of Fear
Genre: Pop
Writer(s): Sia Furler; Jesse Shatkin
Stars: *****
Appearances: 1/1.
I remember the first time I heard this song I knew it was going to be a BIG hit... Well, I was right but somehow I expected it to be even bigger and I am sure if it was sung by Rihanna or Katy it'd have been one of the best selling singles of all time. Nonetheless, I am happy she received a great response. The chorus of this song is so powerful and takes it to a new level compared with the verses. I also know if it wasn't for the video, the song wouldn't have been as big but I prefer the song to the video. |
27. Taylor Swift - Blank Space
| Album: 1989
Genre: Pop
Writer(s): Taylor Swift; Max Martin; Shellback
Stars: *****
Appearances: 2/2.
Please don't crush me. I know this song was huge and still is, I know pretty much loves the song and so do I but somehow I feel like it got a bit old way too fast... Or maybe just overrated and you know by now I have a problem with overrated things. I love the meaning of the song and its funny and sarcastic meaning. Taylor deserves all the success she is having but somehow it wasn't enough to be in my top 20. I am sure if it was released like three weeks ago this would be in my top 10. |
26. Ariana Grande - Problem (f/ Iggy Azalea)
| Album: My Everything
Genre: Pop
Writer(s): Ariana Grande; Max Martin; Savan Kotecha; Ilya Salmanzadeh; Amethyst Kelly
Stars: *****
Appearances: 2/4 || 2/4 for Iggy Azalea.
What happened to me with 'Bang Bang', happened with 'Problem', I was really biased when it came to Ariana Grande and I ignored the song, I only heard it a few weeks after its release and I was (sadly!!) hooked on it and on that catchy beat. It reminded me of 'Get Right' of J.Lo or 'Ain't No Other Man' for the unique instrumental. I fell in love with it and I found the song so cool and so modern, I couldn't help it and Iggy only made it better. My favorite part is, surprisingly, the verses! |
25. Anastacia - Stupid Little Things
| Album: Resurrection
Genre: Pop Rock
Writer(s): Anastacia; Sam Watters; Louis Biancaniello; Michael Biancaniello; Courtney Harrell
Stars: *****
Appearances: 2/3.
From the very first moment I listened to this song, I knew it was going to be bigger than her previous efforts. It is so fresh and it reminds everyone of the old Anastacia that was a force of nature! This song's structure is completely the same as 'Left Outside Alone' but the song itself is not as cold. The song is just way too catchy and ear-candy, it sounds so fresh in a period where you only listen to electronic stuff. Amazing. |
24. Anastacia - Staring at the Sun
| Album: Resurrection
Genre: Pop Rock
Writer(s): Louis Biancaniello; Marley Munroe; Sam Watters
Stars: *****
Appearances: 3/3.
And here's Anastacia's final entry. Just like 'Stupid Little Things' reminded me of 'Left Outside Alone', 'Staring at the Sun' reminds me of 'Pieces Of a Dream' and yeah, I know you're not familiar with any of those four songs but I am and you should too. This song screams pain and rage and Anastacia's voice is just way too good in expressing such feelings. I can feel all the anger she wants to express, the song is dark and Anastacia's best single of 2014. No doubts. |
23. Beyoncé - 7/11
| Album: BEYONCÉ
Genre: Hip Hop
Writer(s): Beyoncé Knowles; Detail
Stars: *****
Appearances: 2/4.
This song is just so f*cking good!! Beyoncé served fierceness here. It was love at first sight, I just love when they (pop/R&B girls) do this type of tracks. They have swag on it but in a cool way, I feel like I am a bad bitch listening to it and I feel good! The beat is sick, she sneezed on it probably. The 'fresher than you' part is just way too good. The song has amazing references, amazing beats, great structure... What's there not to love?! |
22. Lana Del Rey - West Coast
| Album: Ultraviolence
Genre: Soft Rock
Writer(s): Lana Del Rey; Rick Nowels
Stars: *****
Appearances: 2/2.
This is actually funny. I remember when I was putting my chart together, I almost couldn't believe 'West Coast' was 2014 material. I feel like I didn't pay enough attention to it thanks to my disappointment in 'Ultraviolence' but no one can resist to this song. The chorus is just way too good and when it comes in, I just can't help it but to close my eyes and feel the moment. This is Lana at her best, this should've been a hit but Lana was not here for promotion and it ended up flopping . I am so glad she released a song like this though. |
21. Maroon 5 - Maps
| Album: V
Genre: Pop Rock
Writer(s): Adam Levine; Ryan Tedder; Benjamin Levin; Ammar Malik; Noel Zancanella
Stars: *****
Appearances: 2/2.
Is this really happening? Back to 2008 I was a HUGE fan of Maroon 5 (always will be of Adam Levine... With or without music ) but somehow they lost their essence with the following albums, they adopted a very commercial music style and stopped being genuine. 'Maps' brought them back and the proof was in the song's success... Way lower than the previous overrated singles. This song is way too catchy, it is perfect and has one of the best chorus of the year. It was just flawless. I don't get tired of it. I also feel some reggae influences. I am not a big fan of that music style but when mixed with pop... It's flawless! |
20. Lea Michele - On My Way
| Album: Louder
Genre: Pop
Writer(s): Ali Tamposi; Marcus Lomax; Jordan Johnson; Stefan Johnson; Clarence Coffee Jr.; Fernando Garibay
Stars: *****
Appearances: 1/1.
I would not have predicted Lea Michele to slay me as she did last year. Her album was so good and this song as well. I love how fresh it sounds eventhough it is generic (contradictory!). I like her vocals and how the song grows with every note. I also love how the lyrics and how in love they are. I am a freak for happy tracks, especially if they don't become overrated (Pharrell, I am talking to you). |
19. Nicki Minaj - Bed Of Lies (f/ Skylar Grey)
| Album: The Pinkprint
Genre: Hip Hop
Writer(s): Onika Maraj; Holly Hafermann; Daniel Johnson; Jeremy Coleman; Breyan Isaac; Vinay Vyas; Justin Davey
Stars: *****
Appearances: 4/5.
Skylar's part is so catchy and once you listen to it, you won't forget the words to the song but Nicki's part is just way too good. I love her rap, especially when she speeds it up. What I love about this song is how I can feel so sad during the chorus but then I feel so empowered with Nicki's rap. It's like you have two different feelings going on: a vulnerable one and a bad bitch one. |
18. Jennifer Lopez - Booty (f/ Pitbull or Iggy Azalea)
| Album: A.K.A.
Genre: Dance
Writer(s): Cory Rooney; Jennifer Lopez; Benny Medina; Chris Brown; Asia Bryant; Armando Pérez; Thomas Wesley Pentz; Lewis D. Gittus; Tedra Renee Wilson; Danny Omerhodic; Amethyst Amelia Kelly
Stars: *****
Appearances: 2/3 || 3/4 for Iggy Azalea.
I freaking love this song and I do prefer the Pitbull version. I love how fierce, sexy and feminine this song is. The chorus is completely addictive and I admit I expected this to be her hit of 2014... Sadly she flopped but she didn't deserve to. I feel like the world is going against her music but this time she kinda went over the top with that video and performances... People would obviously disapprove. Me, myself loved the song. |
17. Fifth Harmony - Sledgehammer
| Album: Reflection
Genre: Pop
Writer(s): Jonas Jeberg; Meghan Trainor; Sean Douglas
Stars: *****
Appearances: 2/2.
And here's Fifth Harmony final appearance. When I first heard this, I enjoyed it but didn't love it. With time I started appreciating this more and more and now look! Top 20 in my best of! I love how Camilla got her deserved moment and eventhough I dislike Alli, her voice sounds great in this song. I love how cute pop and girly the song is and sounds and I am surprised it didn't become a hit like 'Bo$$'. Well, the promotion was nowhere to be seen though. |
16. Mariah Carey - You Don't Know What To Do (f/ Wale)
| Album: Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse
Genre: R&B
Writer(s): Mariah Carey; Olubowale Akintimehin; Patrick Adams; Terri Gonzalez
Stars: *****
Appearances: 1/2.
Moooriah! Did you honestly thought I'd leave this Queen out of the single chart? This song is so good and reminds me the 2008 track 'I'm That Chick'. It's classy, catchy and so fresh. I wish they'd have released this properly and maybe tried their luck because they didn't even try it. Even the single cover was worth drama. I love the stripped down beginning and the festive (festivity, dahhling!) chorus and verses! Mariah never lets me down! |
15. Beyoncé - Partition
| Album: BEYONCÉ
Genre: R&B
Writer(s): Terius "The-Dream" Nash; Beyoncé Knowles; Justin Timberlake; Timothy Mosley; Jerome Harmon; Dwane Weir; Mike Dean
Stars: *****
Appearances: 3/4.
One more for Beyoncé. 'Partition' is just too good. The way she almost raps throughout the verses and how she goes all sexy in the chorus has me dying. I completely love the vocal effect used in the chorus and the instrumental is mind-blowing. It is just so mysterious, dark and sexy. I could live without the french parts but the song is just way too good and perfect as it is. |
14. Danity Kane - Lemonade
| Album: DK3
Genre: R&B
Writer(s): Jonathan Yi; Jeremy Reeves; Ray Romulus; Mike Lloyd; Rosina 'Soaky' Russell; Michael Ray Nguyen-Stevenson
Stars: *****
Appearances: 2/2.
This girls are badass bitches, no wonder they almost killed eachother. I love them so much and 'Lemonade' is just pure perfection. This song is the best thing you can have to give someone the middle finger through a song. It just makes you feel powerful and good. The beat is amazing and the vocals are just sexy and badass. Aubrey's part is probably my favorite and of course I gotta highlight some lines of the song such as: "I'm late to the party but I'm always on time" or "I'm rockin' my sunnies to block all this shade". Work! |
13. Iggy Azalea - Black Widow (f/ Rita Ora)
| Album: The New Classic
Genre: Pop
Writer(s): Tor Erik Hermansen; Mikkel Storleer Eriksen; Benjamin Levin; Katy Perry; Sarah Hudson; Amethyst Kelly
Stars: *****
Appearances: 4/4.
And this is it for one of the sensations of the year, Iggy. She had quite a year. There was a moment I was completely hooked on this song but it got a bit old with time. It was a bit overplayed though but I love the darkness attached to it and Rita's part is just better than sex, it's so catchy and it just makes you feel like you're being posessed by the song. It's crazy, amazing! |
12. Beyoncé - ***FLAWLESS (f/ Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie)
| Album: BEYONCÉ
Genre: Trap Pop
Writer(s): Beyoncé Knowles; Terius Nash; Chauncey Hollis; Rey Reel; Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Stars: *****
Appearances: 4/4.
This is Beyoncé's last appearance and I'd like to focus that this is the ORIGINAL version, I was quite disappointed with the Nicki remix. I love the mystery behind this track, the darkness, the lyrics, the attitude... Everything. Eventhough I am a little tired of Beyoncé's feminist tracks this song serves so many iconic lines and so much attitude. It is like 'Run The World' got a better version! Just amazing. |
11. Nicki Minaj - Anaconda
| Album: The Pinkprint
Genre: Hip Hop
Writer(s): Onika Maraj; Jamal Jones; Jonathan Solone-Myvett; Ernest Clark; Marcos Palacios; Anthony Ray
Stars: *****
Appearances: 5/5.
This song is on its way of becoming iconic and it missed the top 10 just for one place. I loved 'Anaconda' since the first time I heard it, I found it funny, catchy and just very well produced. The rap is also very well written and in a funny way. Nicki served. When everyone was expecting her to have some less success, here she comes and slays humanity with this butt anthem. I love everything and the talking parts will always make me laugh. |
