Jake T. Austin talks Selena, Justin & J Lo!
Quote:
You knew him as the adorable Max Russo on Disney's "Wizards of Waverly Place," but trust us, Jake T. Austin is all grown up now and ready for the big leagues.
How do you feel about the roles out there for young Latinos?
"I love being able to represent the Latino culture and represent a small but proud few in Hollywood and few in the industry and we really like to support each other. We also like to see each other’s success grow. Actors like Amy Garcia, Sofia Vergara, Al Pacino. He’s not Latino but he’s actually done a lot for Latinos in film. You know, he’s somebody that I emulate and just being able to represent my heritage and translate that on film is something that I look forward to in each project."
Can you tell us what it was like to grow up working with Selena Gomez on Wizards of Waverly Place?
"Selena Gomez is someone that’s a huge part of my life; she’s like my older sister. It’s the relationship she’s always had in my life. When you do a series like that, and you have the opportunity to tell a story to so many millions of people who actually come home from school or work and actually love your show and give you good feedback… we actually have fans that watch episode to episode. To see that show have an effect on certain kids’ lives and make certain people happy, it’s the only thing that brought me a lot of satisfaction and stuff. We’re doing something that makes other people happy. It makes your job not even feel like a job, it’s something you do and you love. It’s amazing to see that seven years since our last episode, we still have a lot of people watching the show -- not religiously, but are still watching and committed to our fanbase. That, to us, means more than anything."
What was your favorite celeb cameo on Wizards?
"We had cast members and guest stars like The Rock and Sylvester Stallone who took on guest starring roles because their kids watched the show. The Rock’s daughter watched the show, it was like her favorite show. So, The Rock showed up one day like 'I want to be in an episode.' So when you have people that approach you and you don’t have to necessarily reel people in and watch your show, it’s amazing. To have positive feedback and look back on it years later, this was a stepping stone in the foundation of all of our careers. I think that was the foundation for everyone, not just myself but also Selena, David, everyone. It gave us all that ground. Okay. Let’s get serious."
You’ve worked with J.Lo on multiple occasions. Can you tell us the funniest or weirdest moment you’ve had with Jenny from the block?
"The day we met each other, I was also auditioning to play her love interest in a film [“The Boy Next Door”].. At the time I read for that movie, I was maybe 16, and I knew I was too young for the role, but I still had scenes where you’re trying to build chemistry with J.Lo... and when you’re working one on one with someone like that, it had me a little bit nervous -- not gonna lie. Working with one of the most beautiful women to walk this earth? It’s great practice for dating."
It sounds like sparks were flying...
"There would be great chemistry between anyone like J.Lo and a 17 year old with hormones going crazy. She’s such a talented and unique person. She’s an A-List celebrity, but she’s also the furthest thing from that. I feel like her, and also Selena, they all have such a level of humility."
What do you think about Justin Bieber’s new Calvin Klein ad?
"You know, people need to leave him alone because we’re the same age. I don’t know if we’re the same age up here [points to head] but he’s a good friend of mine and when he started dating Selena, that’s like my sister. So I was kinda overseeing [who she was into] and he came into the picture and I respected him because he’s a man. People look at him like he’s a little boy, but he’s a man. He handles himself, he takes care of his family, he loves his fans. He just doesn’t make 100 percent of the best decisions 100 percent of the time. You need to take the good with the bad, but he needs to make more music, period. If he made more music, and it’s amazing I feel all the negative press would be overshadowed."
