An assumption. If you read through the article, it becomes glaringly obvious that the parents are covering it up and it angers me. Even if the parents had gone to the police with a better worry than "he's grooming our son for gay sex" there would have been a better shot of the police taking them seriously (granted they should've looked in to a 19 year old alleged rapist regularly contacting a 14 year old). The parents are even setting up a charity to fight online grooming.
I think the easiest way to stop gay kids from hooking up with random creeps online is to make it known to them that they can have the same experience as straight kids at home. There's no need for online hook-ups and secrecy when kids are able to be themselves wherever they want, Of course it won't stop everyone, but it's considerably better than forcing them to meet up online and hide their relationship.
