And does that really change anything?
I should hope Taylor gets better recurrent airplay considering she is a more recent artist and she has both country and pop music that can be played on a plethora of different formats.

This.
There's a reason why every year, thread after thread, it's Britney that they compare the current it girl to. She set the standard. Period.
Taylor isn't a household name or phenomenon like Lady Gaga or Beyoncé are/were their peak, much less Britney
Taylor is successful. It ends there. She's not a phenomenon and she hasn't had any cultural impact. Britney, Beyoncé, Gaga are examples of people who have/had actual impact. Taylor has had success and that's about it.

There are many other ways to measure whether someone's music has longevity or not. For example, Britney's songs are still performed to this day, including by Taylor herself during her tour.

How? We see her influence to this day and she is still successful. Can you explain your made-up criteria?

Mess @ you thinking number of releases is the reason for sales decline tho
According to IFPI: 2908M albums were sold in 2001, and 1062M in 2012 (so sales in 2001 were 2.74x bigger than in 2012)
But let's just look at the top 50 best-selling albums of the year instead (so neither number of releases, or catalog sales can influence the result)
2001: The top 50 amounted to 216M-217M (Hybrid Theory did 10M, you can fill up the gaps with the revealed numbers)
2012: The top 50 amounted to 92.2M
216.5M/92.2M = 2.35x, hardly a difference from 2.74x
As you can see, catalog sales and number of releases are not the reason for the sales decrease
The sales weren't higher because of catalog sales or number of releases, it was simply significantly easier to sell albums in Britney's time than it was during Taylor's.
So comparing absolute sales (even with TEA added) is an invalid comparison as it clearly favors Britney. You can do that, but it doesn't tell who is 'bigger' as their circumstances were completely different.
|
Do you honestly think the volume of releases doesn't have an affect on the total number of albums sold? Stahhhhpppp
Wait, not you posting a chart of shipments and trying to pass it off as sales Btw, Britney is missing but sold 3.3M in just the U.S. in 2001.
I agree that the digital market hurt sales. That's why we use TEAs/SEAs. My argument is that the equation you use (i.e. multiplying an album by market share) is incredibly remedial math of you and is not a better representative of how the market changed than what industry professionals came up with. Your formula doesn't even take album release volume in to account, which is something I'm not sure you understand.

Well Taylor is popular in all the same places Britney is, plus she's popular here in Africa. So Taylor is definitely bigger and more global than Britney because of that.

Britney's bigger in Asia, South America, North America and Europe. I have a hard time believing Taylor is bigger in Africa because she's not very huge in any countries that don't speak English sans Japan, China and Taiwan. Do you have some proof or are you just posting your opinion?
EDIT: She's also bigger in Australia, though Taylor will snatch her there in another album or two.

Taylor is big here in Africa, based on the countries that I've traveled to. Britney's never made an impact here, so calling her global with no presence in Africa is illogical. She's more of a regional act.

Britney has sold more records than Taylor. She had more popularity between the two.
Also, Britney's popularity went beyond music too like her celebrity and sex symbol status.

The Britney base is down so I can't bring up her South African receipts but S&S right now:
#22 Kenya
#74 Mauritius
#127 Namibia
#171 Uganda
She's also had multiple singles top Mauritius. And while iTunes isn't humongous in Africa, Britney's record sales are enough to tell me she isn't irrelevant in Africa. Unless you have some receipts or airplay stats or sales you can post.
I can't believe Britney's global status is being questioned in a thread comparing her to Taylor Swift

Girl Taylor is obviously bigger than Britney in Asia. Put these arguably countries aside, I'd say Taylor completely demolishes Britney in Japan, China, Taiwan, and Philippines, which are the most important markets in Asia.

Britney has incredible sales in Taiwan, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia. Her sales in Hong Kong, Japan (she has better sales than Taylor here) and India are very solid, too.

hell no and she never will be. taylor may sell musically but everywhere else she's not as complete as britney, britney had a personality, stage presence, performances, the audience and the music - taylor has two out of the complete package. and britney was so sought after. outside of when her album drops, the world doesn't particularly go crazy for taylor like they did britney.

Why do you keep using IS? Shouldn't it be WAS? Because Britney is not bigger than Taylor anywhere on planet Earth and hasn't been since 2008. I'm just concerned about your tense usage.
