Woo when I heard her ass "wants to make soca music mainstream" in the U.S. I just KNEW this was coming. That Title song is trash, her accent made me depressed. If you guys want real reggae, listen to Samantha J's hit single Tight Skirt.

I didnt know that southern accents were black only accents. Meghan doesnt even sound southern to me but keep bandwagoning this cultural appropriation ****, its better if you bitch and moan about it on tumblr though, at least there someone will care.

She's a lot worse than Iggy.

Wow, this is like the biggest reach.
Comparing the word fa*gots to "skinny bitches" is like comparing the n-word to "crackers". It doesn't work that way. One of those has been used to oppress, harm and humiliate an entire subsection of humans for decades, the other is just an over the top, and only mildly offensive description (depending on the context it's used in).
That said, you could put "fa**ots" in place of skinny bitches in Meghan's lyrics and relate them to an empowering and uplifting statement about how it's okay to be gay because gay is perfect. I won't speak for everybody, but I wouldn't have a problem with that either. At the end of the day, the statement is meant to be empowering.
This is not some Eminem type mess where he's trash talking and saying hurtful things and then turning around and claiming "no jk I'm not really like that lol" in interviews to save face. It's actually IN the song.

Dumbasses. They are just jumping on her because she is white. With this logic, black, white, asian or whatever culture cannot function as we live in a society that is heavily influenced by ALL cultures. Heck, I couldn't even get dressed without the help of people of other races.
This is such a dumb article. They misunderstood, literally everything and made it a joke. They can sit down with this ****** clickbait journalism.
EDIT: how does 3am sound like Roar or Brave? Reach.

I hate this review for shading Duffy. Whatever though. Meghan still gets the most popular song last year and soon a grammy, while Duffy has been smoking pot happily with the money she's got from her grammy-winning masterpiece 'Rockferry'.

Equality (which are striving for) is considering everyone inclusively, not "only blacks can do this" or "whites only".
What's the difference to seeing "No Blacks" on a store-front, to "No Whites" stamped on a music genre?
But everyone, it's all part of #Equality2015 obviously. A 1950's mess.

This.
Also, just a question, is it considered cultural appropriation when Black artists make music inspired by Europop, synthpop, EDM, or work with white producers? Do they have to be restricted to what is considered "Black music"? Or what if non-Caribbean singers have influences of Caribbean music in their songs?

Mess.
Iggy deserves the hate but not Meghan. I'm listening to the track 'Title' and it isn't so bad.
I love how it's getting harder to get away with cultural appropriation + racism in the music industry though.

I agree she can't touch Winehouse, but the rest is a bit of a reach. She's not as offensively mediocre as Iggy.

Ugh, I know. I've been saying this for AGES. Saying "lol jk" after saying something offensive negates NOTHING.
And what's worse is that people seem to think because she tries to backpedal a line later by saying "I know you think you're fat / but every inch of you is perfect" but, like, anyone who's offended by being called a "skinny bitch" is, by definition, not going to think they're fat. People of all body types can be insecure about their bodies; there are many skinny people who genuinely worry about being too skinny. Shaming thin people for being thin serves no one and flies DIRECTLY in the face of her sanctimonious preaching of body positivity. It's absurdly hypocritical.

How? Sonically, it doesn't sound anything like either one, unless you're just talking about piano, in which case we might as well call every mid-tempo song with piano a copy of Roar/Brave. And the subject matter isn't anything like them either.

Anyways, I think it's great that artists are opening up to other cultures and I don't see anything wrong with cultural appropriation - I think it fosters a healthy attitude where we show respect for each other's cultures and we see the beauty in aspects of them.
Like my parents are both Trinidadian, I'm part Lebanese, I'm part French - back in Trinidad, we welcome the idea of each other's cultures melting. You'll find people of African descent cooking curry and roti - and people of Indian descent cooking food that came from the African side of ancestry. It's a big melting pot, how can you expect people not to borrow from each other's cultures and still expect people to be respectful of each other's cultures? You're basically saying "Oh look yes, this part of our culture is beautiful and we won't let you do it because you're not one of us." Like, I wouldn't have any problem seeing a white girl singing soca, belly-dancing in a beret and shouting African chants during the middle eight.
|
Thank you SIS! I'm also mixed and I agree w everything you said. So does everyone I know. Only the extremist religious douches hate it when foreigners are inspired by 'their' cultures.
