Arête is a term used by the Ancient Greeks, specifically the school of Stoicism, which basically means "excellence of any kind" or simply "moral virtue". The stoics believed in cause and effect although now the term "stoic" means enduring such hardship or pain in silence. Hence why Björk's wearing a mask on the single cover - to hide away.
