the default picture size is not squarish, so kim had to crop it out. she had a choice to make her the center of the picture and leave half of jlegend's face unseen

Well to be honest you can barely see John Legend. The picture is pretty much Kim Kardashian and some random light skin on the bottom left corner. I'm sure she took other pictures with him but chose this one. I mean if she wanted to be in the center then, mission accomplished
