News: Boston wins US Olympic bidding for 2024 Olympics

Boston enters what is already a competitive field for 2024. Rome announced its intention to try for the games last month, and a German bid from either Berlin or Hamburg is expected. Paris and Istanbul are also expected to enter the race, and South Africa has said it, too, is considering a bid.

I'm not sure what to think of this right now. On one hand it's extremely exciting to see an Olympics one step closer to my hometown, but the Olympics have been financial and logistical disasters recently.

Oh my. My news feed on Facebook is in a frenzy. Many people here do not want the city to host. But a lot do because it would mean for some upgrades to the subway, etc. I think it'd be cool, but I'm worried about tax implications.

It's good for tourism, while it's there but after the Olympics are over the stadium basically becomes abandon

I'm concerned as well. Sochi and Rio are the costliest Winter and Summer Olympics in history, and it has been proven that venues built specifically for the Olympics are often never used again. Unlike what the IOC says, the Games don't seem to economically benefit a region, just garner buzz about it for a few months.

However, I do think that the density of our city and the amount of existing venues we have could hopefully minimize the economic impact a potential Games would have here.

Meh. San Francisco or Washington, D.C. would be better choices, though I'd personally love to see a city like Nashville, Dallas, or Miami.

This wont happen in boston or any big US city.

we have way too many sports and events.

Boston joins Rome as the only other city that has officially decided to bid. Germany will submit either Hamburg or Berlin, with France and Hungary among those also considering bids. The International Olympic Committee will award the Games in 2017.

America's last two attempts to land the Games resulted in embarrassments -- fourth-place finishes for New York (2012) and Chicago (2016).

This is why I'm a bit wary of this as well... It's sounds cool, but I could only imagine the effect it would have on the people living in and around the area.

Congrats Boston

For everyone saying it's not worth it, look at the London Olympics. We still use a lot of the venues, it brought in MILLIONS of pounds and people and was the best Games ever. Wish we could host for a fourth time.
