I think the video is about Sia’s relationship with her father, represented through Maddie and Shia, and they have fights and arguments but at the end of the day she was willing to pull him out, away from this darkness that had consumed them both, but it was too late for him and didn’t want to/couldn’t come out. The cage symbolises the troubled relationship.
Saw this interpretation on Tumblr, makes a lot of sense and made me appreciate the video more if that what's Sia was representing.
