This thread is meant to placate the hatred towards religion/organized religion seen on ATRL.
Discuss the positive aspects of religion, how it helped you in hard times and what it means to you beyond just worshiping an entity (community, sense of giving, peace of mind).
I'll start. Even though I don't believe in any religion, I did charity work with a Mormon group and they were one of the nicest people I've ever met. No one was judgemental and we all worked together quite well to give food to the homeless. I've never seen a group of so many diverse nice people and they definitely helped out the community a lot.
It's hard for me to say because I've been picked on about my sexuality lots of time in school because religious people said it was WRONG but one thing i can think of about it being a benefit is the lovely thought of an afterlife whether it's going to heaven or being reincarnated i think both of them are lovely ideas
I'm an atheist but religion has fleshed out every aspect of human culture and given us some amazing buildings and I realise it brings a great deal of comfort and joy to devout people's lives, which I respect, and it's a kind of solace I'll only ever find in things like philosophy.
There are lots of charities partnered with religion, some schools, missionary work, also provides people with networking and a social setting, some people genuinely believe in them
It's not for everyone though, I myself am glad to not belong to any religion.
It provides somewhat weak people with hope and comfort in this cruel world. It also gives guidelines on how to be a respectable human being (10 commandments). I'm not a religious person but I believe some people indeed held down to their urges to harm another because of religion.
It gives some people the chance to cope with things. The ability to connect with something on a deeper level. It gives hope. Religion can help others and bring people together. It isn't always a tool for hatred and evil. Unfortunately, it is assholes that usually get noticed. Yes, I am one of the biggest religion bashers on ATRL. But, I see the good side of things too. I just don't play with asshats
in the right hands it can provide salvation and encouragement to be generous/kind in life. for a lot of people living in adverse circumstances in the world, the whole 'this happens for a reason' etc. is reassuring.

Well we can pray when we feel lost and hopeless. Also there is a sense of community between people of the same religion. im not so religious but my mom and others are and I see that they can fall back on their religion during hard times. it helps them a lot.
oh also religious music is very upflfting and usually has a good message.
