Russell Crowe: "Females should act their age"
Quote:
"The best thing about the industry I'm in – movies – is that there are roles for people in all different stages of life," he said. "To be honest, I think you'll find that the woman who is saying that [the roles have dried up] is the woman who at 40, 45, 48, still wants to play the ingénue, and can’t understand why she's not being cast as the 21-year-old.”
Crowe, 50, doesn’t think all female stars behave this way; in fact, several stand out to him as role models for the rest of Hollywood.
"Meryl Streep will give you 10,000 examples and arguments as to why that's bulls—t, so will Helen Mirren, or whoever it happens to be,” he said of the Oscar-winning stars. “If you are willing to live in your own skin, you can work as an actor. If you are trying to pretend that you’re still the young buck when you’re my age, it just doesn’t work."

I expected to see something more misogynistic, but he has great points.
Acting your age isn't just one thing. There isn't a standard for being a male or female as much anymore. Being a 45 year old woman doesn't mean being a soccer mom.
The best example would be Julianne Moore's part in Don Jon. She acted her age, but it was definitely an interesting character that wasn't stereotypical.

I thought his comments would be different when I saw the title.
He's right.

I kinda see the point he's trying to make
It's sucks overall women are expected to appear more youthful while men get to have more age and a 'rugged' look in their roles or in their beauty

He has good points, but I bet the issue for a lot of actresses is that there just aren't enough good + big roles for older women in films. Male directors (and filmgoers) are unfairly favoring hot young actresses.
First example that came to mind is Silver Linings Playbook. Don't get me wrong, love the movie, absolutely love JLaw's performance in it. Very happy she got the part. But... objectively, the source material doesn't really call for the characters to be 16 years apart. An older actress would've been a more accurate casting pick.

I disagree. It's Holywood -- it's more about the look, not the number. If you look like an ingénue, then you can play the ingénue. For instance, Rachel McAdams was nearly 30 when she played teenager Regina George. Furthermore, Russel Crowe looks like an unhealthy drunk at 50, and that's on him. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise, at 50, still looks like a fit, action hero, thus, Tom Cruise can hold his own with 20-somethings. Jim Parsons, the man who plays 20-something Sheldon Cooper on "The Big Bang Theory," is 40-years-old. In conclusion, I understand what Russel Crowe is getting at, but it feels like it's coming from a passive-aggressive place.

Hmmm I agree but the only reason Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren get better roles is because of who they I think. Of course there will be roles for Meryl Streep over 50....she's Meryl Streep. lol

that's all I needed to see to know he was full of ****.
Women can take whatever roles they want and even in a more general sense, can behave however they want. If you're 45 and you want to go to a club to dance and have fun in a mesh top and a mini skirt, damnit do you! Why they take "younger" roles is really no one's business. If they're delusional, so what? You can't project your opinion of those women onto all women who want to take younger roles.
Haven't men learned by now that starting any statements with "Women should..." is never a good idea?

perhaps what he's saying would hold more weight if 90% of the roles for women in hollywood didn't require you to be 21...

I agree with this. If you can pull it off then it should be fine.

Yeah, I'd say it's true for Hollywood. But going slightly off-topic, J Lo still looks very young yet her music flops. I still think First Love should've smashed. If Ari sang it, it would have went #1 IMO, and it's not because she'd sing it better.

Terrible examples.
Rachel McAdams was not "nearly 30," she was 25 when Mean Girls was filmed.
As far as the other two... Crowe's statements pertain to women not men. But since we're on the subject: Nobody considers Tom Cruise a whipper-snapper. In fact he's kind of seen as a pariah nowadays by most people. The fact that he still looks good and maintains his physique has to do with how well his look matches the look of the character he's playing, not his age.
And if I'm not mistaken, all the guys on BBT are playing thirty somethings. Jim Parsons has been in that age bracket for the majority of the show's run.

It's not the actresses fault that they look young enough or healthy enough to perform a role meant for someone younger

The problem, Russell, is that the amount of roles for women in their 40s and 50s is dramatically less than those available to men, or to younger women.

On average, Hollywood film couples will have 10+ years of difference between the actors, with the man always being older.
