Uhm, I think it's a bit different. Album sales were a lot better back then and Rihanna was coming off of a pretty big record (a record with 'Umbrella' on it). Gaga was coming off of a record that was successful but deemed a flop by just about everyone. The circumstances the two albums faced are completely different.

I don't think either were a flop, just underperformances that spawned a hit or two. But the thing is, people like to call ARTPOP a flop while ignoring other underperformances like Rated R so it's fair to call Rated R a flop since "ARTPOP is a flop" is something most of ATRL thinks.

it´s not a 100% flop ,"rude boy" was a hit so o.o
and russian roulete was a top 10 in many countries
and te amo was succesfull in the UK

I don´t like Rihanna I´m just honest

I could be picky and say RR wasn't a flop because it's opening numbers were bigger than GGGB, RR was a hit WW but it didn't do as well as most of the GGGB singles . It also was selling MUCH quicker than GGGB for the first few months of release.

Artpop immediately was underperforming compared to BTW's opening numbers, and the singles were her weakest of her career(besides the AirPlay for applause).

However, in the end RR was an underperformance for Rihanna because her previous album sold double the amount and had way more hits. It may have sold on par with AGLM but Rihanna's starpower was far greater in 09.

Artpop also underperformed although i believe unlike RR Artpop took the wind out of Gaga's sales, and left her with some of worst performing songs to date unlike RR.

Both are underperformances but for different reasons and circumstances.

I don't know why people go with the "but RR sold 3M!!!1111" argument when sales in 2013 are down ~21% from 2009 (2014 sales are down ~30% from 2009)
