Nothing changed other than the fact that your ISP *must* forward you the copyright notice. Before, they had the *option* of forwarding the copyright notice. The copyright owners are not going to be sending out more copyright notices than before.

If the company w/ copyright wanted to sue you (the individual) they'd have to take the ISP to court to get the individual's names/addresses in order to sue them. The copyright company only knows your IP, not your actual identity. They're only allowed to charge a maximum of $5 000 for *all* violations for one individual. Due to the extensive court process this would require, it would be difficult to financially execute this process since you'd probably end up settling for a much lower amount anyway. Companies will think twice about pursuing lawsuits due to the maximum $5000 fine unless you are a distributor. Especially because you are ALLOWED to possess a copy of material you have already purchased so in theory, if you have purchased a copy of whatever material and then seeked out a digital copy, they'd have to prove you don't already own it.

So people cursing Canada... calm down. We have a cap of $5000/person for ALL violations from one copyright. We are not good targets if you wanted to profit from copyright notices. Now places without a strict law like this? You are ****ed because until you have explicit legislation, you can be sued ruthlessly.

A lot of people have received these notices in the past in Canada and completely disregarded them without anything happening. I'm not saying this is a good idea, I'm just trying to put things into perspective for you.

99% of artists are not on the level of someone like Madonna. You buying their music is important. The producers, engineers, etc need their money too

Yeah, that's easy to say. I mean, I understand 100% where you're coming from, but in my country albums cost around 150% of the price in US and the minimum wage is 3-4x lower.
I'm using Spotify for now and buy the stuff I stan for, but I probably won't have the luxury of using it in the future as the artists are doing everything in their power to erase it.
