It is not necessarily that people deleted their accounts but rather during the server change[s?] ATRL systematically changed the user numbers in transition process. I know just in 2004, the user number was a lower. I believe there was a specific number that was added to the user number but I am not sure what it was.
Anyway, it would have been really cool if the 10,000th member had joined on the 10th anniversary :-p
Edit: I tried finding my older number but I know it was lower, whereas now I am 3092?
At some point, we upgraded the site and duplicated the 2,500 members we had at the time, so the duplicates had to be deleted. Also, a long time ago, we deleted about 1,500 really old memberships that hadn't been used in many years.
