Though the floor-length gown covered Rihanna’s feet, the crystals were not the showstoppers— the see-through material showcased her own sets of private diamonds both in front and behind.

So I read through the article and nowhere does it say these are the "most searched", rather outfits that have trended throughout the year. What is being said is that in this publication's opinion Rihanna's outfit is the best out of the outfits that trended on Google in 2014, not the most searched.

Trending, not searched. Trending = aggregation of people all over the web talking about it and causing Google trends to pick up on it. Searched = people going onto Google and manually searching for the dress/about the dress. Both are achievements but you're saying it's something it's not. I guess "most talked about red carpet appearance" would be closer to the truth.
