The mother's Facebook status is appalling.

Her tumblr reminds me so of so many others. You never know how close to the edge someone really is, you truly don't. It's so upsetting that parents can be that out-of-touch with their children, or at the very least indifferent to the pain their children are feeling. When you see the child you raised and gave birth to obviously hurting and struggling with their identity, how do you make efforts to hurt them even more? How do you deny the truth even after they are gone?

no! that is not her. she is simply a girl in a boy's body she is not trying to change herself she is trying to be who she truly is how she felt since she was a little kid. god made her to be a transgender girl. what they did was beyond me they cut her off the world for 5 months? can u imagine that happening to u?! then took her to the religious therapist who made her feel even worse.. of course that was one of the reasons she got deeply depressed and unhappy. may she rest in peace.

u need to understand what ur doing could have psychological effect on trans people. transitioning does not happen overnight it takes years till she could do surgery! its not that simple. im sure leelah wouldve wanted u to call her with female pronouns bcz thats how she sees herself.

This is so sad.

I can totally relate to the feeling of having religious family that gets to be self righteous at the same time. Im not trans, but I guess LGBT feels the same way whenever you have no support from the people who should be there for you in every step of the way.

I feel sad that she took her own life but I cant blame her for doing it. Life is really unfair I guess, One day you're having fun then life has a silly way of ruining it by giving you people who thinks high of themselves and cannot understand what it is to be living in someone else's shoe.

Wow, this is really sad and you what makes it even sadder? the fact that the mom kept pretending she didn't know it was suicide and everything was fine. Her FB post just seeemed so cold and just try to make herself look good..she knew damn well it was suicide. I hope this goes viral so her parents can realize how messed up they were for not supporting their kid.

Its extra sad when young teens kill themselves. If they just hung on a few years until adulthood they'd gain such a different perspective and outlook on life. Becoming an adult is like a fresh new start and you become so much stronger and more in control. I honestly think that in just a couple more years she would have had been so much more optimistic. Especially if she were away from the shackles of her parents and their religious shaming. Seems to me this was her biggest obsatcle. But that obstacle wouldve been gone in a few years.
