Beyoncé reached a new level of star power and exposure in 2013 - starting with the Super Bowl, of course - which made the surprise release even remotely feasible.
I don't see it working for artists who take a break for, like, three years and randomly come back with a surprise album after a period of inactivity.

People had to decide for themselves whether it was any good. And general consensus was that it was. If this type of release forces pop girls to really focus in on the quality of their work, then I'm all for it. It was just such a strong album with a running narrative.
