Uptown Funk | Habits (Stay High) | Monument | Partition
Don't agree with that version of H(SH) being better than the original, though. I never got into it, really, it's just too repetitive and somewhat bland. Maybe I have to get high to enjoy it?
may as well kick of the best songs top 10 in a few mins

I never bothered to listen to Summer or Only, like at all.
7/11 is good. Yeah I get why you hate it but I think it's actually full of direction - it's just not trying to be subversive.
Break the Rules is good too IMO but I agree the lyrics are stupid. IDC, it has a good breakdown in the chorus.
Wiggle... I like It's probably the stupidest song ever, and the fact that the beat is an out of tune recorder is just But that's why I like it. It's like it's trying hard to not try. and it's so stupid and I just... think it's hilarious.
a habits-remix-sized mess hopefully y'all will like the other half of my worst of list, although something tells me you might not hihih. i get what you're saying about 7/11 tho madonnas.
it's a huge monolith of a banger. every time it gets played at a party or wherever it goes off. it's a really fun + effective song, dare i say underrated slightly
9 Jealous (I Ain't With It)
Chromeo
i was relatively indifferent to the whole 'white women' album, but jealous definitely stands out as one of the highlights. it's fast paced, buoyant, fun and hella catchy. it's one of those songs i ruined by overplaying it in june, but i still come crawling back every now and then
8 Let Me Down Gently
La Roux
la roux's 'trouble in paradise' may not be as ostensibly pop as her eponymous debut, but i still think it works. the whole motif of 'trouble in paradise' is a perfect symbol. the tropical and island sounds heighten the idea of desolation and as a whole it beautifully conveys the juxtaposition between elly's fame and success against her internal struggles.
let me down gently, the first promo song from this album, is probably, for me, the real standout (although tropical chancer and sexotheque are bops as well), and it's beautifully paced, moving from this hollow-sounding ballad to a tropical feast. the melodies are absolute killers, and i would dare to say that her vocals sound a lot more natural/less-strained on this album.
kind of wish i included it on my best albums list now
7 West Coast
Lana Del Rey
lemme begin this by saying: i'm really not a fan of lana del rey
i think the problem with lana del rey is that her moments of brilliants - flitting by as quickly as the images on a video game - have caused her to be placed on a slightly misinformed artistic pedestal by her most diehard fans. born to die, in particular, is constantly praised to the heavens on atrl when, really, it's a very overbearing album to listen to from a production perspective. she relies on cliches as lyrical crutches and the structures of her songs (for the most part) are very one-trick
west coast was one of those moments, however, where i slightly believed in lana del rey: the artist. the centrepiece of the song is the stark tempo changes between verse and chorus, and i think it beautifully illustrates the juxtaposition between her persona's idyllic relationship and the morally bankrupt, alcohol-driven society in which she lives. there's this constant push and pull and it's really enthralling to hear
the 'down on the wesshtt cooasssht' narrative is enchanting, and invites you into the microcosm of 'ultraviolence'. but, as soon as this all begins, it ends, sad girl begins to play and i regress away from my belief in this artist
Turn Down For What It could potentially end up being a party classic
it already is!
gna get started on my first four albums. the list is pretty terrible and gynocentric bc i basically only made it to contextualise how much i love the #1 hihihih
you know, i heard people express disappointment with this album relative to their previous ones, but taking it for what it is i enjoyed it tbh. it's a lot more subtle, psychedelic and seductive than el camino, and i liked the change of pace.
plus the artwork is kinda beautiful to look at
9 My Everything
Ariana Grande
yeah, this album has quite a few weak points, but at the same time it's a solid collection of songs that sound current, fresh and exciting. ariana's triple punch of problem/break free/love me harder is probably the best one since just dance/poker face/paparazzi, and there are still plenty of other good songs like best mistake, only 1 and hands on me which help the album retain a sense of consistency.
imo, aside from taylor and bey she's the only atrl pop girl who shows great signs of potential with their next release
8 Gone Girl (soundtrack)
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
are soundtrack albums cop-outs? if so pretend this is lp1 or run the jewels 2 so everyone's pleased.
it kinda helps that i adored the film, but there's a beautiful and simple astral quality to the soundtrack too. my fave comes early on with sugar storm, but the album is filled with these delicate, cosmic sounds which elicit such a strange emotional effect with such little going on.
7 Goddess (EP)
Chrome Sparks
are EP's cop-outs? if so pretend this is lp1 or run the jewels 2 so everyone's pleased.
so you may have noticed that the song 'marijuana' by this very same artist is one of my faves from 2013, and before i go on i implore you to listen/watch the video because it's so magical and amazing
please please please please
it's on spotify too so no excuses
and i rarely use spotify on my computer so i had no idea how to do that, it was a massive ordeal so you have to.
so anyway his goddess ep is here much to the same effect as the gone girl soundtrack. he's an electronic artist and there's a beautiful, ethereal quality to his music wherein he creates these beautiful cosmic landscapes with his work, and i just find it incredibly hypnotising. marijuana from his previous sparks ep is still my fave but goddess is still a solid all round effort.
WC was not as instant as I thought it would be, but it grew on me a lot since. Now I think it's one of her best!
True Blue is one of few that I didn't like on the first listen. :-/
