20 Midnight
Coldplay
 |
soooooo i may as well get this started with a song which what i liked in 2014
a breakup album dedicated to gwyneth paltrow of all people was probably 2014's biggest gift to music critics, and to be honest a large amount of ghost stories was undermined by the vacuous characters which underpinned the basis of its story.
midnight was a great stroke from this album. having the lyrics inaudible, for one thing, was a something which really helped because no one wants to know how much chris martin misses his ex while watching tv. but in all seriousness it's probably coldplay's most organic and convincing take on this theme, eschewing their usual [blank] full of [blank] ac and young adult pandering pop record.
although it is slightly disconcerting on their behalf how it owes itself almost entirely to abandoning coldplay's usual style and instead doing their best impression of sigur ros.
ANYWAY

Midnight is cute, though it's one of my least favourite off the album.

19 Right Here
Jess Glynne
 |
so i got really drunk and went out two days before christmas which is just FABULOUS if you want to spend your whole christmas eve with a headache, however more importantly i heard this song to which, before then, i had never really paid that much attention. but when i heard this come on it was a certified banger and the intonation of 'right here' against the beat is just so simple and works so effectively. and somehow i knew all the lyrics which was weird
i feel like the deep house trend in the uk got a little contrived at times, especially with the whole culture of people having outgrown dubstep now professing their lifelong love for deep house, but this song works without being too convenient
i also wanted to include it because i imagine lots of people will be praising rather be which, for some reason, i just can't get into

18 My Love
Route 94 ft. Jess Glynne
 |
onwards with the jess glynne parade, route 94's my love may have been overplayed for me this year being a drinking staple, but i've never fell out of love with it. jess' vocals match so well with deep house backdrop as per, but there's just something really warm about this track as well - hence the video (shot in infra red) works perfectly.
shout out to another bop that didn't make it: gorgon city's ready for your love

17 Uptown Funk
Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars

|
so my choices this year are very mainstream, and this is probably as far as it gets. this song is pretty irresistible but it's everything a wonderful pop song should be: whimsical, packed with character and delivering hook after hook as if it were reeling them out on a production line. it just resonates with an audience instantly. bruno shows a fantastic sense of james brown-level charisma on this track and ronson, as ever, delivers brilliant production.
the retro-ness of this track reminds me that i forgot giorgio moroder's 74 is the new 24 on my best of list which is annoying |

16 i
Kendrick Lamar
 |
you know, i didn't really like this song at all when i first heard it. it was probably because it was the exact antithesis of what i'd come to expect and hope for from kendrick - something uplifting with a distinct attempt at being slightly pop accessible.
however, when you take it for what it is it is a fine track, not his best but still listenable. probably what i love about it the most is how he almost plays the artistic reincarnation of outkast here all in one person. it shows his adaptability as an artist, and yeah it may be a bit too ostensible as a rhythmic hit-attempt but it hasn't slowed down my excitement for his next lp

15 Stay High (Hippie Sabotage Remix)
Tove Lo

|
i'm not deliberately doing this to be a contrarian, but the hippie sabotage remix of tove lo's habits is infinitely better than the original. there's something a lot more otherworldly about the way her vocals are pitched and the way the instrumental slowly warbles in the background. it gives the whole thing much more of a disorienting atmosphere which in turn elevates the message of the song
congrats to the usa for picking up this song, but the uk let the right version smash |
14 Monument
Röyksopp and Robyn

|
i've never really been a fan of robyn. i guess i never really understood the hype of everyone treating body talk as if it cured an epidemic, or praising (in particular) the song 'dancing on my own' which i thought was one of the most trite things i ever heard. this wasn't any different when i saw syg erupt one night praising the robyn and royksopp collaboration 'do it again', which, again, i didn't care for.
it was only when i saw monument and, in particular, the video which i finally warmed to something robyn other than with every heartbeat. there's something really beautiful about the simplicity of the lyrics. they sound like concise instructions on how to treat something with care, almost as if she's holding a fragile china vase. instead it's her life/her legacy, which may seem like an obvious metaphor but the song kinda is beautiful.
even though both the spacey video and the 10 minute song may seem ambitious, it's all rooted in the humble message 'So that when the moment comes / I can say I did it all with love', which is kinda a beautiful way of elevating the profound nature of life and our legacy on the world |

yeah. i feel like some sort of inauthentic music listener buying into all the commercial deep house which smashed in the uk but it's all so irresistible

Oh I thought it worked better as a album, it really gave off a nice relaxed mood, plus it's sort of like a tale from breaking up to acceptance and it's quite poignant.

13 Gust of Wind
Pharrell Williams
 |
pharrell + daft punk is kind of a golden match. get lucky is my favourite song of this decade so far and i think it'll probably stay that way for the next five years. while this song may ever-so-slightly be undermined by 'When I open the window / I wanna hug you / 'Cause you remind me of the air' but all in all it's a successful throwback collaboration and certified bop
|
12 Crying For No Reason
Katy B

|
released right at the beginning of this year, i grew to know crying for no reason when it was regularly played at work. in between having to listen to songs which may later be featured in my 'worst of 14' list, crying for no reason was a refreshing break
there's something distinctly emphatic about the whole 'crying for no reason' motif, but at the same time the song isn't annoying or weak: 'Why can't I be strong and just confront all my fears?' It's a really well-balanced breakup song.
i listened to it again while writing this and i kinda wish i placed it higher. OH WELL. |
11 Partition
Beyoncé

|
so beyonce was, like, my third best album of last year, and i figured i may as well give credit to one of its standout tracks which was released earlier this year and disappointingly didn't make much of a splash on the charts.
partition is amongst self-titled's most explicit moments, but it handles it so well. it's not just the lyrics which grab and bite viciously, but the production itself - as soon as yonce ends and the sparse bassline edges in - there's something innately seductive about the way it all sounds. obviously it contains some of the most memorable, quotable parts on self-titled (driver roll up the partition please and monica lewinsky being atrl staples), and in general just works on so many levels.
my other ultimate faves from this album are mine, haunted and rocket too. |
