30. Mariah Carey Me. I Am Mariah...The Elusive Chanteuse ()
Never been a huge Mariah fan either, but in the midst of a bad personal year, Bitch I’m Moo staged a little bit of a musical turnaround through playing to her STRENGTHS to create her most enjoyable full-length in idk how long. No boring ballad suites or stretches of tacky club attempts; these songs are paced really well between fun dance-pop, hip hop throwbacks, and some very soulful traditional R&B howlers, among other things. The whole thing is too long, though. Still an exemplary late-career effort that succeeds through maturity and not rebellion; not embarrassing in any sense.

no matter how much "Shake It Off" grew on you over time, don't tell me you don't feel AT LEAST a little bit embarrassed for her every time we get down into "this.sick.beat."
I actually found that part less embarrassing than the talking bits on WANEGBT.

Don't know what it is about Shake It Off. I like the song. I think it makes me picture her as like a theater kid and that's a no for me.
Don’t worry that Ke$ha might be pushing past her expiration date — Tove Lo will do just fine as a substitute. “THE SEX,” “THE LOVE,” “THE PAIN”; her subject matter is similar, but her shtick is blunt honesty as opposed to pathological lying, and it’s a good look. That kinda debut album that comes locked and loaded with possible world-conquering singles… it’s all about those melodies, yo. Underrated.

ok, Pitchfork! This was not Future Islands’ debut album, but it for sure marked the start of their breakthrough year, providing a fresh and modern take on new wave music. There’s a lot of pop momentum carrying the album through in parts, but just as entertaining are the frontman’s… impassioned vocals, and even more so the fact that the lyrics here tackle a lot of topics that you don’t usually see addressed in pop music. Give it a spin! Singles both as 'instant greatest hits set' AND 'lonely ass people.' You see what they did there.

JUNGLEPUSSY came up as a very agile and quick-witted female rapper in a year packed with them, but you know none of those other hoes could match her **** talk game. Her soundcloud () debut brought the smack down, but also doubled as a self-help manual in a way that most rap releases don’t. Like sitting down on a couch with an old friend for 40 minutes and not getting a word in! And 10/10 the year’s most quotable hip hop album.

Lol I see where that comes up but I found there was a lot more personally to her album tracks than there was to the ones I had already heard on her EP, even though I liked them. And she's just a really skilled pop songwriter which I appreciate.

I maybe didn’t get as much out of Quincy’s major label debut as I did his previous release Habits & Contradictions, but no denying he offered up one of 2014’s most diverse and party-ready rap sets. OXY never lets up the chill as it drifts from sound to sound, getting at a lot of the different sides to Q. At the core here is the titular oxymoron of Q’s life; all he wants is create a life for himself and his daughter that’s free of trouble, but between now and then there’s a lot of bad he has to do to accomplish that goal…then there are of course all the ways that this relates back to the drug Oxycontin. There are tracks like “Blind Threats” with Chef Raekwon and “His or Her Fiend” with SZA that further prod at this moral quandary (“Why the ones who commit the worst sins live the best?”), but mostly each song pushes the topic of conversation a little further into its own unique direction. A lot of the highlights are pushed surprisingly far back towards the end of the album, but it’s more than worth a trip through to discover what they are.
