Discussion: Gays: What can we learn from all of this racism?

REAL Discussion:

In my world history class while discussing the Holocaust, it was brought up how public opinion can change a lot faster than people think. That is both a negative and a positive, as people can go from being oppressed to being accepted, but it also means it can be reversed almost as quickly.

Gays and black people are similar in that way, as both were once oppressed, and now they are seemingly accepted.

While the LGBTQ community have had a pretty good decade, and lots of progress has been made and social acceptance is at an all time high, I don't believe for one second that gays are at all immune to this prejudice, and this new found acceptance can fizzle away.

Sometimes when you push ignorant people too far, they snap back. I worry that gay people may in the not too distant future have to deal with something similar to the Ferguson tragedy (it will obviously be different, but hopefully you understand what I'm getting at).

What are your thoughts? -And please keep this civil.

The AIDs epidemic set us back SO much, and that **** came out of nowhere. It just means we always have to keep pushing; an exhausting but necessary existence.

Be nice to everyone especially to your own people that you still discriminate because of their looks and all that stuff. Also it would be nice if the gay community was less oversexualized. I don't want to know what happens in your bedroom nor I want to talk about sex 24/7. Get a life.

Also we should stop forcing our sexuality down everyones throats. It's not gonna make people like us any faster. Calling out black people for using the racist card yet we're using the homophobic card for every damn reason.

We should 'also' start to understand the struggle of other communities rather than attacking them.

Just my opinion though.

i liked the other points you made , but i think i can explain the point above your making , the reason for this is through the after math of what the mass media protrayaed gays - which was a style identity and not a sexual one , we were seen as accessories , being gay was something to be fetishsized over in the fashion industry but not something you'd want to hear about sexually > think about queer eye for the straight guy. as a result sexuality for gays is a form of freedom - hence gay pride has those men in under wear

The bolded parts I really disagree with. How is the gay community forcing their sexuality down people's throats? Everywhere I go, I usually see heterosexuality so can I say that straights are showing their heterosexuality down my throat? I dont understand how someone expressing their sexuality is shoving it down anyone's throat.

Also I find it unfair that you're blatantly calling out the gay community for talking about sex all the time when people of all genders, sexualities etc etc do the same. Way to generalise...

I think the gay community, as a general whole, is pretty good at understanding the struggles for others.

To answer the OT: I think what we can learn is not to be complacent, homophobia will always exist sadly.

Welp, I would like to see the responses to this because you have pretty much summed the hypocrisy of people on this board and exposed a whole lot of attitudes found here over the last few days.

Don't be a dick, accept other people, do less labeling and stop putting people in boxes (that's the main reason why we have most of these issues), don't associate yourself with people that can be problematic, lead a healthy lifestyle, don't take things too far, I'm too lazy to get involved..... just be cordial to everyone to avoid drama, it makes things so much easier.

what i see is the racial extremism of black people. If they don't want sharing their cultural identity with white ( in fact, thoughtout the process of 19th and 20th centuries, they're impacted by white culture as well ) they can leave and go back to Africa.

Not that it's ever fortune to repress yourself, but at least sexuality isn't quite in your face as skin colour, a physical thing. Not that there's anything less enjoyable for a gay person than to hide in the closet, but at least it's an option? For a black person oppressed by racism, from their literal birth they are subject to racism.

Anyway, what we can learn is to count our own blessings and not to compare these situations, but there's plenty of room for both movements to be pushed forward, because even though they're separate - they're both under the same umbrella. (and don't come for me, I know I'm serving a Katy "#AllLivesMatter" Perry tea - but there is a point to be found. It's a black issue, but one that can only be resolved through the agreement and co-orperation of all people.)

Who said we even wanted to leave Africa? White people took us against our will and now that were "not needed" we should go back?
