This is not only untrue in general, considering Europeans would not have survived without the knowledge of the Native Americans, but also close-minded and ignorant. Nobody is attempting to retroactively apply different standards to a given period of time - we're applying modern standards to the modern celebration of a holiday.

Columbus Day is not "culture and tradition;" it has been a federal holiday for less time than four of my own direct relatives have been alive, it has been an official holiday anywhere for only 118 years (which is comparatively short given the age of the nation being over twice that), and most importantly it has a LONG history of opposition rooted in the character of Columbus the man and the nation's treatment of indigenous peoples. This isn't a significant holiday that has major cultural standing or major implications in its elimination; it's also not a holiday that holds moral ground in a society that is capable of recognizing its own faults and those of its historical figures.

Right. Give the day to someone else.

The fact that Columbus Day is even a holiday is embarrassing. The only thing this mf "founded" was white supremacy. In Latin America, Dia de la Raza & Resistencia Indigena shift the focus away from Colon in favor of staying true to history.
