How does Kelly Clarkson get big stars for her benefit? She calls her mother-in-law
When Kelly Clarkson decided to put on a big benefit concert with less than 90 days’ notice, she knew just the person to jumpstart the lineup.
Her mother-in-law, Reba McEntire.
“I called my mother-in-law first, because I figured if I could tie Reba in, people would say yes,” says Clarkson, who’ll host Miracle on Broadway at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena Saturday, raising money for four local charities. “She probably just said yes because she’s my mother-in-law, and it would be awkward at Christmas if she was, like, ‘Oh, I turned you down.'”
Things fell into place quickly after Reba signed on — Clarkson quickly added Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Meghan Trainor, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Martina McBride, Kacey Musgraves, Ronnie Dunn, Nashville star Charles Esten and hit songwriter Shane McAnally, all of whom will sing Christmas songs and their own tunes, too.
It’ll also be one of the first public appearances for Clarkson’s infant daughter, River, who was born in June. “It’ll be her first charity show,” says the proud mom, who held a press conference Thursday to talk about the concert, which she plans to turn into an annual event. “She won’t remember it, but we’ll take a picture.”
One person who turned Clarkson down: Dolly Parton, but only because Clarkson didn’t approach the country queen until last week, when she was practicing a version of Parton’s Hard Country Christmas to sing at the concert. At her husband’s suggestion she emailed Parton – and got turned down by fax.
“I asked her eight days ago, so she has plans,” Clarkson says. “The fax, I’m actually framing.
“She faxes, y’all — come on! I don’t know that I’ve ever sent a fax.”
