Shakira or Taylor Swift: The debate about free music
Just this year, when Taylor Swift released her album '1989', she removed her entire repertoire from Spotify. Swift doesn't feel comfortable sharing her music for free:

But not everyone shares her opinion. In 2009, when colombian superstar Shakira released 'She Wolf', she claimed music is a gift and should be shared with everyone:

But I also understand it's not ideal for the record industry, and a lot of young artists who won't make any music off their album sales, but at least they can tour. You'll find an audience, and you may not make like millions of dollars but you'll make enough to have a house and a family and a car.

There's more. Just this year when 'SHAKIRA.' was released it was made free for a lot of people through T-Mobile users and not only.
So whose opinion do you support? Shakira or Taylor Swift?

No one's right or wrong. It's their music anyway.

Honestly, if i was an artist, i would go the Taylor route. Im really too concerned on the success aspects when it comes to myself. But Shakira really is a different kind of person. She is all about giving, she collaborates with a lot of charities and her main intention is to help. When she wants to be profitable and successful, she just tours, which sadly she has been unable to do because she gets pregnant whenever she is due to tour. Not that i complain, enjoy your youth and get as many childs as you want, i´ll enjoy the music while i wait till you hit the road

Hmmmm Shakira
Even if Taylor is right that the streaming services don't completely compensate the music industry, she should just focus on Touring and other business ventures, I think that streaming in the future its gonna be just making money so labels can survive and produce artists and artists should use the exposure to make a huge name and bank from touring. Is just the way its seems like its gonna be from now on. Which will bring way more quality artists to the industry that can make a great show live.

The talented one.
Music is free to a certain extent. Yet I wouldn't take certain peoples music even if it was free.

The artist should be able to sell what they create
Imagine painting a portrait then suddenly everyone being mad they can't take it for free

She's been touring for decades and her brand is still very strong in latin america and europe. She doesn't need to tour that much now.

All Taylor hate aside, I genuinely side with Shakira here. Music is too commercialized these days. If someone can afford to give away their music they should.

I know she doesnt need it. What i meant, is that if she really wants to be a hot act near the top of Forbes, she just has to tour, she doesnt need the record sales. Plus, im sure she 100% does not need any more money, but still, i think the touring label she is signed to would like some touring from time to time

A bit of both. I hate the idea of artists not being compensated fairly, but music is currently too expensive. If I purchase, on iTunes at the current price, all the music I love / like during a year I would have spent around $1500 or more, and that's just too much for me.

Me personall, as a music fan, I will ALWAYS buy the music I like. I obviously download stuff but I end up buying them and supporting them. I feel like what Shakira said is right but hard if you're a new artist.
Even if so, I believe every artist makes more money with touring, streams and sponsors. For example, Shakira's latest album sold about a million copies but I am sure her endorsements with T-Mobile, with Activia, with the World Cup, with her perfumes got her way more money.

Shakira did not say "go stream my music free" she said music is a gift. a gift doesnt always mean free. it can mean "i created this for you now give me your pennies hunty"

Legend Shakira also said this:
Quote:
With millions of dollars in the bank from record sales, Shakira can afford to be relaxed about her income.
But I also understand it's not ideal for the record industry, and a lot of young artists who won't make any music off their album sales, but at least they can tour.'
'You'll find an audience, and you may not make like millions of dollars but you'll make enough to have a house and a family and a car. I don't know though, maybe the clock is ticking.'

Music is a gift and it should be free. Nowadays, people only care about the charts and having #1s. Taylor, for instance, only cares about the numbers. She even sold her soul to pop music when she's supposed to be a country singer lol.
she probably meant that people don't make music for the love of music anymore...

I think music should be free, but you should pay to go to their show. Thats how artists get most of their money anyways. Songwriters can be paid off of radio royalties, but music is a gift as Queen of Colombia stated
