So, a friend of mine sent a text message out to a bunch of us and said he'd like to donate to charity for us, in place of buying actual Christmas gifts. I thought that was cool and shot him back a note for the charity of my choice.

I heard back from him and he was thrilled I was willing to take part. Several other people told him that it was a rude, thoughtless and incredibly tacky gift. But the spirit of the season is to give a gift of love and having them select the charity of their choice and to do good for others in need seems like a better choice.

Surprised by the reaction, I was curious to see what others thought. I didn't see a problem with it and I was honored he'd let me choose a charity. What do you guys think?

I think that's a really great idea actually! There shouldn't be an obligation to buy people stuff anyway, the fact that he asked people what charity they would like him to donate to was nice.

That's what I thought too. I was pretty surprised when he said people were going that route. I mean, it's helping out other people.

I remember mom got mad at my sister for not buying her a gift cause my sister could only afford to buy for the kids in our family. It seems since then my mom has become less of a mess.

If i dropped a couple of hundred on someone and they returned the favour with a 'a donation has been made in your name to [insert charity here]' I wouldn't be too impressed

Really nice idea As long as the charity is legit, I don't see why people would be against it. A majority of us probably don't need more stuff anyway.
