Jer' blessed us in 2014 with one of the most life-affirming DJ Mustard songs in the canon, but before the expensive taste came this mixtape which, reaching for comparisons, I'd say most approaches a longer, more traditionalist foil to Cassie's free masterpiece RockaByeBaby. 17 tracks and EACH one nails it dead on, displaying at a level of craftsmanship wayyyy beyond what should be expected of the dude who gave us 'Down on Me.'

Just remember to strap it up no matter how late your own nights get, or you'll get a urinary tract infection.

Her self-titled this year (we'll get to it) was notable for how it found her streamlining her sound into something we could recognize as "pop" music, but the point she was teetering on with the record prior really kept me hangin on with a distinct sense of mystery. Oh, and the fuzz.
Ask me which one I like better.

Omg the quaintest pop music with the sweetest emotional core. Maybe the only album ever I'll be able to agree on with my bitch ass white bread loaf of a housemate. How is it that I came to listen to this through ATRL?

Very diff in sound from the album up above, but that first sentence stays kind of accurate? 'Quaint' just switching over to 'explosive' and 'sweetest' to 'most conflicted', BUT. 'Dominos,' key song is every bit the equal of 'Time to Pretend,' 'Electric Feel,' 'KIDS,' and that ilk, and that's something that makes me feel excited. And just in case you were wondering what the band members looked like or were waiting for a tie in back to the target demo of this forum, I got you!

52. SBTRKT Wonder Where We Land

Our masked hero is here out done with the making of festival-ready rave hits, but in their place come some pretty swanky explorations into worlds of sound that we never even approached the first time around. Not everyone dug this one — of course it's also not as good as the first album, but you win some you lose some. Interesting to me too how in the absence of more concrete song structures, Sampha's contributions still shine though.
Hands down best cover art of the year, IMO.
