I forgot just how fun your favorite stuff of last year was. I can only hope that 2014 is just as fun.

Bring it on! Your taste is very interesting, not everyone had David Bowie as their #1 last year

| | "Keep It To Yourself" was the final single from Kacey Musgraves' acclaimed debut album Same Trailer Different Park, which was my top album of 2013. On this song, which did minimal damage on country radio, Kacey tells an ex that she doesn't want know if he still has feelings for her. She addresses this issue with ease, and her lyricism is as sharp as ever here. | | | "The Way I'm Livin'" is the title track of Lee Ann Womack's stunning new album. On this song, Lee Ann sings about the vices and temptations that she succumbs to. It's telling that the hook's lyric, "If I ever get to Heaven, it's a god damn shame" opposes the norm of country music. Rather than hoping she'll go to Heaven, she very much doubts that she'll get there | | | "Meanwhile Back at Mama's" is the latest collaboration from our favorite country power couple, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. I'd go so far as to say that it's the best (musical) collaboration ever produced from their happy home. The song's subject matter hits right in the heart, as Tim wistfully sings about the easier life he left behind in his small hometown. | | | For the second year in a row, Kacey Musgraves occupies two slots in the top five of this countdown. "The Trailer Song" is a funny standalone single in the vein of last year's #1 song "Follow Your Arrow." In this song, Kacey tells off a nosy neighbor. "We get our mail on the same side of the street," she sings to remind us that we're not so different from the neighbors over whom we claim superiority. The song's message harkens back to "Follow Your Arrow," as both songs are rooted in the idea that we should live our lives without judging those around us. | | | "Try" is the closing track of Dolly's fantastic 2014 album Blue Smoke, and it was released as the album's second single (in the UK, technically, but I'm letting it slide). As you can no doubt imagine, "Try" is an encouraging anthem with a wonderful vocal performance by one of country music's most enduring- and endearing- legends. "Try" carries a message of hope, of perservereance, of faith, of love. There's a sly double meaning to the lyric "I've reached for the stars, I've even held a few" (a lyric that I only wish Taylor Swift had penned before Dolly). Another notable facet of the song is that it's not so much optimistic as it is realistic. Life isn't all sunshine and roses, and Dolly's old enough to know that, so she tells us "whenever you think you ain't gonna make it, put a smile on your face, suck it up and take it for a while." This is Dolly Parton, fifty-eight years into her career, holding her own in an industry that rarely acknowledges its elders. I'd say that this is Dolly Parton effortlessly outshining all those artists who came after her, but that would suggest that she was past her prime. |

I haven't heard Lee Ann Womack's new album, but I'll check it out later. The other 4 songs were fantastic choices!
Your description of "Try" is so accurate, no one could have said it better.

I love my Dolly but I haven't mustered the interest to listen to Blue Smoke. I'm sure it's incredible though.
