Girl you're being willfully ignorant. "He doesn't have to sing about dick all the time". No one said he did we said he sings about relationships but purposefully waters down his lyrics to appear straight. No one said ALL THE TIME, but he hasn't done it even once. Hell he even edits other people's lyrics to not sound gay.

Can he even be considered out with that album, as a person he's out the closet but as a musician he's in gotdamn Narnia. If being gay is equal with straight (his words) then "singing about dick all the time" should be as acceptable as "singing about ***** all the time".

There goes my point. Even though he's gay he makes sure not to listen to it so some non accepting straights still knock to his music. He knows that if he says "he" instead of "you" tehre are lots of people who'll change the station or not buy the song but he still wants those people to buy his records.... it's odd.

Firstly, Sam isn't ashamed of being gay. He would've pulled a Colton Haynes if he did (Gay photo's on the net, pretends it didn't happen). He just has a professional image, and a personal one. We still see him act like he used to, just not when he's working.
Secondly, Sam never says "She" or "He" in his songs, but we know he's singing about a Man. But so he can relate to everyone he keeps it Neutral. He also never pretends to be straight in his video's. His latest video features a straight couple, but he is just telling the story.



But it's called Gay Stereotyping that a Gay person must relate everything to being Gay. It's what setting back the Gay community several years.
I'm pretty sure Gays are trying to shake off the fact that to be Gay everything must be "feminine" and "Gay". Being Gay is just a sexual preference. It doesn't always have to come with the whole package.

Sam has has no shame telling people he is Gay, therefore he's not ashamed. He doesn't have to bring the stereotype to his music or to his professional image. He likes Men. That doesn't mean everything has to be about Men.

I'm pretty sure Gay's hate when a straight person acts homophobic because they think you sexualise every male because of the Stereotype that Gay's are in. And now you are getting angry that Sam is breaking that Stereotype. Like Really?

A person not wanting to be defined by their sexuality does not mean they are ashamed. There seems to be a habit that once someone comes out they're suddenly known as 'that gay guy' and I can see why that would be annoying. Sam probably doesn't want to only be known as 'that gay singer' but that doesn't mean he's ashamed of being gay, it just means he feels he has a lot of other things to offer other then just being gay and he wants people to see that. Him being gay is only one facet of his personality and people shouldn't focus on that all the time.

Maybe he and his label don't want to put him in a box. Being gay is still taboo, and how many successful gays have there been in the music industry? And I'm not talking about those who came out long after their success.

I don't see anything wrong with being gender neutral. He told us that he is gay and doesn't want to be defined; that's his right. He wants to have appeal across the board. Who really wants to be categorized anyway? I know Michael Sam did not like to be referred to as "the first openly gay NFL player" in ever single article about him.

Honestly if he wasn't gender neutral people would talk more about him liking dick than the quality of the music. Don't see the problem. He's smart enough to make it known he's gay without putting it in the limelight..it's quite smart. Let the music speak for itself. Him being gender neutral doesn't matter when you can interpret it either way

and all these people saying "he just wants to appeal to audiences"... exactly. he's making sure that everything he does isn't too gay so it doesn't scare people away. the self loathing is real

it's like when people who aren't white whitewash themselves to appeal to others. what's the difference here? you can defend them too by saying they just want to be known by their name instead of their ethnicity, but the self loathing is still there

Um, women should relate to love songs relating about men pretty well so that makes no sense. His newest videos has a straight couple, but which one had a gay couple? He literally would rather tell straight love stories then his own. Seems like shame to me.

I said absolutely none of that. No where did I say he has to be feminine, or "bring the whole package". EVERY SINGLE STRAIGHT ARTIST PROUDLY PROCLAIMS THEIR LOVE FOR THE OPPOSITE GENDER. Yet Sam is silent because he "doesn't want to be defined" and "is breaking stereotypes".

You guys keep insisting "not everything has to be about him being gay". But on his album, and in his music video NOTHING is about him being gay. He is not doing what his straight counterparts are doing is my point, they SHOUT OUT who he is and he whispers it in the shadows. It's not my fault people are homophobic, but he should be able to sing about men without them gettign angry.

The self loathing is real. I'm "judgemental" and "real" for implying that he shouldn't hide his sexuality behind straight-themed videos and gender neutral lyrics to be as innoffensive as possible. As said several times in this thread he is obviously covering up who he is for success and I don't know or care why calling him out for that makes you so mad.
