It's super tacky. They're clearly still learning the language and there's no reason to publicly embarrass/shame them for it, especially when most of the time the person calling them out on their english can't speak another language to save their life. If you know what they mean then there is no reason to call them out on it or make fun of them.

studying languages has helped me appreciate how difficult it must be for them to communicate on a, for the most part, daily basis in a language that isn't their own. english is also a really difficult language anyway, so like...

i think, though, correcting them without being unnecessarily mean would be beneficial. if i was having to communicate in one of my other languages in the way that they are with english, i'd like to be corrected, but not be ridiculed if i made mistakes.

That is so uncalled for, even if they don't know you're from Europe, it's extremely tacky to come for other people's grammar unless it's constructive criticism.

P.S "Whom" is rarely ever used in every day language, (at least in the U.S) so that might have been why they thought it was funny.
