“I didn’t say anything too crazy, did I?” asks Azealia Banks in her high but husky voice, like Minnie Mouse after swallowing sandpaper. It’s the end of our interview and she wants to check how she’s done.
About Eminem:
“I’m just having a laugh. Like it’s OK for Eminem to have a laugh and say he’s going to punch my friend in the face, but now I’m the wrong one. I thought we were all joking! Come on! Men can do it, but as soon as I say something, people are looking at me like I’m crazy. It’s just pure misogyny.”
About her ex-label:
“I guess they were more excited by the idea of me than my actual music,” Banks says, adding that “they were excited by the idea of this cool girl who was going to make all this cool music, but they weren’t cool enough to understand it”.
In the end they let her go, and the album is now available via iTunes through her new label Prospect Park, with plans to release a deluxe CD version early next year.
She says she can’t wait to go on tour, and to show off the new tracks she’s been working on, which promise to be as unpredictable as ever. “Just get bigger and better,” she says. “That’s all I want to do now.”
